Hurricane Science Legend Dr. Robert Simpson Dies at Age 102

Dr. Robert Simpson, one of the originators of the familiar Saffir-Simpson scale, passed away peacefully in his sleep today at the age of 102. He was the director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) from 1967 - 1974.

A temperature inversion is when the temperature near the surface actually rises with height. This type of atmosphere can be very stable and hampers vertical motion. On this date in 1994, a strong temperature inversion occurred over Chicago, trapping carbon monoxide in the pollouted air below the inversion. This resulted in 5,000 false alarms from carbon monoxide detectors.
