Discussion... at least scattered vigorous thunderstorm development is expected across parts of southern New England this afternoon... within the warm sector of a weak frontal wave. Fairly steep mid-level lapse rates are contributing to sizable cape... in the presence of modestly strong deep layer shear beneath 30-40 kt westnorthwesterly 500 mb flow. Supercell structures appear possible... contributing to the risk for severe hail and potentially damaging wind gusts.
Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm motion vector 29025.

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 12:37 PM EDT on May 21, 2013
... Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms possible this afternoon across much of southern New England...
A cold front moving south from central New England will provide the focus for scattered thunderstorms to develop this afternoon.
Some of the storms may produce strong damaging wind gusts and hail... in addition to lightning and heavy rainfall.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop between 1 PM and 4 PM across most of Massachusetts... northern Connecticut and northern Rhode Island... especially near the Mass Pike.
If you have outdoor plans... have a safe place to go to if thunderstorms approach... such as a vehicle or inside a home or building. Remember... if you can hear thunder you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
