... Flood Watch in effect from Saturday morning through late
The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a
* Flood Watch for portions of east central Illinois and
Indiana... including the following counties... in east central
Illinois... Ford and Iroquois. In Indiana... Benton... Jasper and
* From Saturday morning through late Saturday night.
* An unseasonably strong surge of warm... moist air associated with
a storm system developing in the Southern Plains will bring
widespread rain to northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. The
heaviest rain will likely be south of a line from Gary to Gibson
City. South of this line upwards of one and a half to two inches
of rain is expected from Saturday morning through Sunday
morning. This rainfall will be on top of around one inch of
liquid equivalent in the melting snow pack that may lead to
areas of flooding. Also... with frozen soil... there will be
little opportunity to infiltrate into the ground... so the snow
melt and rainfall will almost totally runoff into area
rivers... streams... and catch basins.
* The most likely areas to be impacted by flooding will be the
Iroquois and Kankakee River basins and associated tributaries.
In addition... fields and other low lying areas may see
flooding. The rapid warm up will also lead to ice cover on area
rivers breaking up... which could cause localized ice jam

flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
