A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST this
* Timing... freezing rain and sleet will gradually transition to
heavy snow from northwest to southeast over the Missouri Boot
Heel region and west Kentucky through the afternoon. Elsewhere
across the area heavy snow will continue for much of the
afternoon before tapering off around sunset.
* Amounts... additional icing due to freezing rain of one quarter
to one half inch can be expected near the tennesssee border
areas of west Kentucky. Storm total ice accumulations will range
from one tenth along Interstate 64... to near one half inch over
portions of southeast Missouri and west Kentucky. Total snow and
sleet accumulations will range from 10 to 14 inches along a
corridor centered from Piedmont Missouri to Benton Illinois to
Princeton Indiana. Some isolated higher amounts can be expected.
Totals of 4 to 8 inches will accumulate along a line from
Sikeston Missouri to Paducah and Owensboro Kentucky this
afternoon. Only an inch or two is expected across the remainder
of western Kentucky.
* Main impacts... this is a major winter storm. Travel is strongly
discourage. Treacherous driving conditions have been reported
throughout the area... and they will only get worse through the
day. Some isolated power outages are possible... especially over
west Kentucky. Strong north winds may result in some drifting of
snow. The combination of the north winds and extreme cold will
result in dangerous driving conditions tonight into Saturday.
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If
you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in
your vehicle in case of an emergency.
