The National Weather Service in Great Falls has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for heavy snow... which is in effect from 6 PM MDT
this evening to 11 PM MST Sunday for elevations above 4000 feet. A
Winter Weather Advisory has also been issued. This Winter Weather
Advisory for snow is in effect from 6 PM MDT this evening to 11 PM
MST Sunday for elevations below 4000 feet. The Winter Storm Watch is
no longer in effect.
* Timing and main impact: periods of rain and snow... heavy at
times... are expected Saturday evening through Sunday evening.
Rain falling at lower elevations Saturday night will change to snow
at all elevations early Sunday morning.
* Snow accumulations: most mountain and foothill areas above 4000
feet will likely receive 4 to 8 inches of total snowfall... but
some peaks may receive up to 12 inches. The plains of north
central Montana and the valleys of central Montana will mostly
receive 2 to 5 inches of snow. Snow amounts will vary greatly
due to melting early in the period.
* Winds and visibility: north winds of 10 to 20 mph are
possible at lower elevations... while 20 to 30 mph winds are
possible in the mountains. Heavy wet snow could reduce
visibility to less than one-half mile at times.
* Other impacts: travel may become difficult while snow
accumulates over area passes. Bridges may become snow
covered and icy at all elevations. Heavy wet snow could
cause isolated power outages. Livestock may be at risk of
exposure to hypothermia.
