Areal Flood Warning |
 |
|
Statement as of 5:51 PM CDT on May 21, 2013
The National Weather Service in Tulsa has issued a
* Flood Warning for... Haskell County in southeast Oklahoma... Latimer County in southeast Oklahoma... Le Flore County in southeast Oklahoma... Pittsburg County in southeast Oklahoma... Pushmataha County in southeast Oklahoma... Sequoyah County in east central Oklahoma... southeastern Muskogee County in east central Oklahoma... southern McIntosh County in southeast Oklahoma...
* until 600 PM CDT Wednesday
* at 546 PM CDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated areas of light rain gradually coming to an end from west to east across the warned area. Although additional rainfall amounts will remain light... three to six inches of rain has already fallen during the past 24 hours over much of southeast Oklahoma and flooding of low lying areas and low water crossings will likely continue. The Kiamichi and Poteau rivers are forecast to flood... and many other smaller creeks and streams are likely flooding as well.
* Runoff from this excessive rainfall will cause flooding to occur. Some locations that could experience flooding include... Antlers... Clayton... Eufaula... McAlester... Poteau... Sallisaw... Stigler... Wilburton... Albion... Alderson... Arrowhead State Park... Ashland... Bengal... Big Cedar... blanco... Blocker... Bokoshe... Briartown... brushy... Cameron... Canadian... Clayton Lake State Park... cloudy... Crowder... Damon... Dunbar... Enterprise... Fanshawe... Gans and Hanna.
This areal Flood Warning will replace the flash flood warnings that are set to expire this afternoon for the same area.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the Road to unknown depths. It only takes two feet of rushing water to carry away most sport utility vehicles and pickups. Take a different Route to reach your destination or wait until the water recedes. Remember... most flood related deaths occur in automobiles.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. If flash flooding is observed act quickly. Do not enter the water. Turn around and move up to higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins rising.
