Public Information Statement
Statement as of 5:00 am EDT on May 18, 2013
... National safe boating week begins today... National safe boating week occurs each year during the first full week before the start of the Memorial Day weekend. This year it runs from may 18 through may 24... and we start with the topic of life jackets. Before you and your family get out on the water this season or any season... grab a life jacket and wear it! Nearly 90 percent of those who drown while boating were not wearing a life jacket. Wearing a life jacket is one of the most effective and simple life saving strategies for safe recreational boating. Boaters are required to have a United States Coast Guard approved life jacket on board for every passenger on their vessel. Life jackets are available in a wide variety of shapes... colors and sizes. They are comfortable... lightweight and perfect for any boating activity or sport. No matter what the activity or life jacket style you choose... the most important thing is to remember to grab a life jacket and wear it! More additional information... visit the National safe boating Council website at... Www.Safe boating Council.Org. This message was brought to you by the National Weather Service and the National safe boating Council.
