Statement as of 2:59 AM CDT on May 24, 2013 ... Cool today with near record cold tonight... Surface high pressure will build into the area from the northwest this weekend. This system will bring much colder temperatures into the region. Temperatures today will be below normal. These temperatures coupled with breezy northwest winds will result in apparent temperatures mainly in the 60s. The cooling continues tonight with readings falling to near record lows. Overnight lows will be around 15 degrees below normal. Readings this cold with approach or exceed record low values. Late night patchy frost is also possible across southwest Virginia... northeast Tennessee and portions of the region down to the great Smoky Mountain National Park. Sheltered valleys will be most susceptible to frost tonight.
