... A Flood Warning for rain and snow melt remains in effect until 845
PM EST Wednesday for Tazewell... Summers... Greenbrier... Mercer and Monroe counties...
At 613 PM EST... stream gages continue to indicate flooding across the warned
area and there have been reports of widespread flooding of creeks
and streams in both Tazewell and Mercer counties and isolated reports from
The heaviest rainfall today has remained west of the warned area but
additional rainfall up to a half-inch /0.50/ is possible tonight which
could produce renewed rises on rivers and streams... before a change
to frozen precipitation occurs.
The Clinch River at Richlands was nearing crest at 6 PM this evening at
around 12.25 feet. Minor flood stage is 10 feet and moderate flood
stage 13 feet. This crest is the highest at this gage location since March
The Bluestone river gage near Spanishburg in Mercer County was at 15.20
feet just before 6 PM and still rising. The rate of rise has slowed
but it may yet reach 16 to 17 feet by later this evening before cresting.
Minor flood stage is 12 feet and moderate flood stage is 15 feet. In
March 2010 this gage reached 17.50 feet which is the highest in the
five years since the gage was installed.
Extensive lowland flooding is occurring along much of the river and
significant portions of Route 19 are closed near Spanishburg.
Brush Creek in Mercer County is also still rising and could produce
flooding near and west of Princeton.
Indian Creek near Red Sulphur Springs in Monroe County is also above its
minor flood stage of 8 feet and is still rising. Lowland flooding
is likely and some roads may be affected including County Road 23.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to
higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to
flooding when water begins rising.
