Nice blog!! Never been to Australia, heard it's a beautiful land!! I know your weather can be real, real crazy!!

I lived in Dallas-Ft Worth, TX for 29 yrs! I have personally seen grapefruit size hail on 4-29-93, $750MIL USD damage in 30 minutes, beat my 74 Surburban & 84 Old Cutlass to death, luckily no broken windows! Hailstones went through the roofs of houses and hit the blacktop streets so hard then left permamnent marks on the street, denuded 75% of the trees!!

In March 2000, an F2 and F4 tornado hit Ft Worth and Arlington, TX!! I drove through both towns a week after that event! It was amazing to see downtown skyscrapers missing 40% of their plate glass windows!! In Arlington, some houses were untouched in a 2 sq mi area, but other houses were 60% destroyed!!

My oldest son spent a year on the island of Western Samoa in the care of a Samoa Family. I was finally able to get word of the village and what is happening there.

Multiply everything you see in American Samoa by two. American Samoa has military support - Western Samoa - a nation of peace BTW - has nothing. Thankfully New Zealand and Australia are stepping up to help this country.

My son stayed in the village of Vaitele, 12 miles from Apia - with a family whose matriarch is a Tafuamaseafa (Female Chief in the Samoan culture)
This is on the opposite side of the island that was hit by the Tsunami - so they are all safe....

But the other side is still reporting causalities and the infrastructure is gone. A very rural island they lack much of the machinery needed to begin a clean-up. Food will be in short supply.

I am told it was a blessing the quake occur in the early morning hours instead of a night. Once people felt the rumble they knew to head up to the hills. What was difficult was many children were on their way to school and many parents were frantic looking for their kids... I am stopping here... you can visualize the rest.

In closing, Aussie's request is well-founded - if you have a way to help these warm, loving, peaceful people please do.

Wow, those clouds look awful familiar to me! I hope that particular storm didn't cause too much severe weather. It's amazing that almost the entire eastern 2/3 of Australia is experiencing terrible drought conditions.

Hopefully the El Nino will run its cycle quickly so your nation and the US weather will settle down. However, it looks like that will not take place until Mar 2010 at the earliest.

Mornin Aussie, just wanted to pop in and say hello. My son just got home from a wonderful trip to see part of the Australian Open tennis in Melbourne. He spent about four days in Sydney before coming home. This included a trip to the Blue Mountains and climbing the Sydney Bridge. He wants to come back but needs to save again for the trip. He met up with US friends while he was there. He is a pilot so he could travel Non Rev. Got business class tickets on Quantas and Delta. He said the Australians are lots of fun.
