Celebrating Space Exploration
Posted by: GardenGrrl, 5:43 PM GMT on June 05, 2012
This is an amazing year for space exploration and star gazing. Watching the live feed of Spacex Dragon docking to the International Space Station put goosebumps on my arms.
Science fiction has long predicted we would explore the cosmos. The day the Dragon docked to the ISS marked the real start to space travel. It's not the government, but private industry who will colonize the galaxies. Each generation their own group of genuises that bring us new tech.
Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell; American giants followed by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce who invented the pivotal semi-conductor chip. We now have Elon Musk and his associates to bring us new marvels.
This is truly a historic time. It seems fitting that we have the Venus Transit across the the sun. The world will not see this again until 2117. What fancies will become reality then? Will we "surf" planet orbits to skip through the galaxy? Discover "space currents" to sail? The biggest question, will we perfect FTL?
Love the pics! Particularly the first one with the moon. We have overcast skies but as soon as the sky clears, I will try to take a photo for you.
Have a wonderful time on your vacation. Are you doing anything special or just relaxing? And, your work is important and if you cannot blog it is very understandable. We'll see you when we see you. :)

Good Morning Sandi, Anything to do with looking at the sun I just watch the pro feeds on the internet. Night photos are challenging enough. Good Moon and Jupiter.
Hi LC, Wur U still blinkin sunspots? Lol ;)
Hi Prose, we are going up to a wildness area that has cabins with all the amenities so I'm hoping for relaxing and bird pics.
Hi Shore, had to show your current blog around because it was such a cool photo essay of the "space shuttle" getting delivered.
And now off to work; hi ho hi ho doe doe di di doe doe

Your holiday sounds perfect... I do hope you have some wonderful R&R.
I was surprised by your comment in my blog about work unions. I belonged to a union, because I had to, to be able to teacher, although I am not a union person, but they do help provide much safer working conditions.
When do you head off to your wilderness?

I guess it's a matter of perspective, but 8 12 hour shifta is a lot of work, but here in this union shop, particularly in maintenance, we'll beat that. During department shutdowns all of maintenance splits into 12 hour days and nights, and everybody works up to two weeks straight, with no days off!
Most union contracts gives companies the right to set work scheduling as they see fit!
You're going on vacation after this week? Awesome! Did you find a sitter for the Ruffians? :)
I say nanotechnology and gene manipulation will be used to have a much longer lifespan than before!

All good things come to an end. This time, it's Ray Bradbury, who was one great visionary and truly great author. So much of what he imagined has come to pass. In a recent interview, he was hoping he could live another ten years because he had that many more thoughts and ideas he wanted to share. He'll be missed.
On a lighter note, the little market in beautiful downtown Toledo, WA, now carries PG Tips. I'm so excited to be able to get this great tea without having to pay shipping costs.
Whenever you're heading out -- and I know it's soon -- don't forget to pack your camera!!! We expect a Travels with GG special edition when you return.

Hi BC, yes we have lost a pioneer of vision and imagination in Ray Bradbury.
So glad you found a store with the wonderfully addictive P&G Tips...which I am drinking right now. It has made the transition from coffee rather painless.
Hi LC, I am so looking forward to a sky FULL of stars. So wish there was a meteor shower this week.
Hi Karen, thanks. I actually got an AC for that. Went by to your blog and see you are on hiatus from blog maintenance.
Hi Ylee, dang, what good is a union that doesn't protect you from overtime abuse. No rest becomes very unsafe. Ah, nanotech...that is one of those really cool things that could make huge artificial evolutionary changes in our species.
Hi Rebel, yeah I kind of noticed that too. We are seeing many more cases of people caught on Iphone cams being stupid. As soon is there is undetectable photoshop we should have more UFO's and Bigfoots. Then again, maybe the aliens are rather camera shy.
Hi Sandi, totally excited. The living room is filling up with things to bring. Funny, when I was younger a student book pack was enough to hold all my travel items. Now it only holds my laptop and tech accessories. Yes, the kids have been sorted out. Roxie goes to doggie camp which she love. The minute we get ther she no longer "knows" us and is running off to play. Syd has three so far indestructable water bottles. He is in charge of taking fingers and dna samples from any burglars. He won't put up with someone taken his beloved TV.

In 2117? A moonbase for processing material mined from asteroids by robots. Run by the Chinese, of course.
Looks like you are about take well-deserved vacation! And that it will include a sky full of stars - hurray!
I LOL'd at your line about needing only a backpack in younger days. I can't believe how much stuff gets packed in my car these days - even for day trips. Wherever I go, I want my stuff!
Have a wonderful time :)

Hmmmmm.... In the medium future, maybe you could combine vacation and space exploration.
Watch out, Kardashians! A Dutch company says it will produce the biggest reality show on the planet, centered on a group of humans who colonize Mars.
In the wake of SpaceX’s first successful commercial mission to the International Space Station last month, Mars One has vowed a much grander feat, according to reports.
