Sunday, January 08, 2012 Voice to Text--- .Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that about mid morning yesterday the last of those bands clouds that were off shore in the Pacific passed over Baja. This morning the Eastern Pacific Basin is pretty much solid high whispys with patches of clear skies. During the night we have had a few passing clouds and this morning there are still some high whispys here and there. Directly off the west coast right now there is an area of clear air so this morning it looks like some high whispys and mostly sunny. This afternoon could see some more cloudiness. We’ll see? Looking south to the Mexican Riviera where from about Mazatlan south to Manzanillo they have seen some passing whispys in the past 24 hours and it looks like these isolated stringy bands of whispys will continue today. Looking further south: The only thing I can see a small squall just west of Panama this morning. The rest of the west coast is clear. Even the Tehuantepec this morning is clear and the big winds are gone. The next three days the winds are forecast to be in the moderate ranges so it looks like a brief crossing window is open. Looking now out into the Eastern Pacific Basin to that area of convection along the ITCZ/monsoon trough that has been pumping out all those clouds for over a week now. It does not look much different than it did a week ago and the forecast. I have been saying these clouds are emanating from the ITCZ/monsoon trough. On closer inspection ITCZ is around 8N this morning and this area of convection sort of fills in an area between 12 and 19N. That would be well to the north of the ITCZ. The only notable difference is that if these bands of clouds were further south they would have a lot more moisture in them. That’s it for our hood so looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image I can see the northern Storm track wide open and the northern Pineapple Express is feeding cold systems moving down through the Gulf of Alaska and sending them through the interior of British Columbia. Most of the storms will just brush the Great Northwest however today a weak warm front will slide by quietly and then tonight a cold front will bring widespread rain to northwest Washington. Northern California under building high pressure will be chilly and dry well into the week. Sacramento was 34 degrees this morning. Another cold spot is Missoula Montana. Pat and Moe our newest residents on the donkey beach just arrived yesterday. I don’t think they will miss the 27 degrees it was there this morning along with snow flurries that are forecast for today. I digress! Moving on to southern California. With a 1018 bar over the southland and a 1030 bar over the Nevada plateau the gradient will give cause to a moderate Santa Ana wind event today lasting into tomorrow. There is another low system that will be moving down the coast Tuesday and Wednesday and the models are all offering different scenarios as to what it will do. The only thing I know is the longer it stays out there the more moisture it will bring ashore. Perhaps tomorrow the models will come to some agreement. So looking now over to the southwest where a cold front is moving out of southeast California and into Arizona this morning. This could bring a few showers to the region today. Another system I just mentioned that will be moving down the California coast tomorrow and Wednesday will move thought the area Thursday and Friday and there may be enough moisture in it to bring some showers to Arizona. It will remain cold. Tucson was 37 degrees this morning. Interesting Herford at 5000 feet was 44 degrees at sunrise which was the same temperature as Yuma. It looks like the tail end of the low moving though Arizona this morning will extend south into the Sea this morning. As the system exits Arizona today high pressure will be filling in its wake. That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the fence high pressure building across the Great Basin region early this morning has begun to tighten the gradient across the north end of the Sea. As this system exits to the east northwesterly winds will increase. How much is the problem I have. Two of the models I use indicate winds in the 17-22 knot ranges and the other is indicating 20-30 through the northern half of the Sea this morning and spread through the entire length of the Sea by tomorrow morning. So here I am perched precariously on the horns of a dilemma. Do I tweak the winds down a few knots or leave the higher values. I left the higher values although I don’t think the central see will be seeing 30 knot winds. We’ll see? Temperatures will be about the same as yesterday and we should see some cooling starting tomorrow.
