Because the mid March heat wave made such an impact in the mid west I thought I would find a photo of my pond taken last year and another I took a few days ago. After much searching of my archives (I really need to delete the bad, duplicate, out of focus, etc photos) I found this photo taken on April 11, 2011.
That's the top of Luna's head at the bottom. As you can see that ice cover is still pretty thick and would take a couple more weeks to thaw. This is pretty much how it's looked every spring for the previous 11 years I have lived here.
But check out the same pond on March 22, 2012, take a look at the same pond, I think the temps hit 86 that day.

Besides the unseasonable early thaw of my pond and the surrounding lakes, my rose bushes have leafed out, the pussy willows are already going to seed and my lilacs have buds. Last night's low dropped to 21 degrees and the night before was 25. I covered everything as best I could, whether the lilac blooms will be saved is hard to say, some of the buds did not look healthy yesterday.
There is quite a wind out there, too, I'm thinking the 20 mph gusts have already shown up though they are predicted for tonight with only "less than 5mph" winds during the day. Heh, sometimes the forecasts are so wrong. Isn't weather watching a blast?
