Notice Anything Different?
Posted by: WunderPress, 2:04 AM GMT on February 02, 2011
You found your way to this blog so you've already seen the new design of wunderground.com and we hope that you like what you've seen so far.
This is the culmination of 2 years of development and planning with the goal to improve the user interface and make it even easier for our users to quickly surface the weather data that they are looking for.
In fact, you could argue that this is the culmination of 16 years hard work. As you know, we constantly launch new products and tools to enhance the service we provide to you all. Over the years we've added so much data to the back-end that we needed to reorganize the Site Architecture - a spring clean as it were.
This has helped us group all of our content into 7 main channels which in turn has led to the easier to use navigation of the new site. The simple new layout design presents the data in a more digestible format and appears less data heavy.
Rest assured, we have not taken away any of the data from the old site. To the contrary, it is now easier to quickly view a lot more weather data than before - especially on the city forecast pages where you now get an overview of the hourly forecasts without having to click to a new page.
There are too many new benefits to list them all - the load time is a lot faster than the previous version, we have new graphics such as spark lines that enable you to quickly view weather patterns and you can customize your city forecast page using the collapsable modules.
If you want to learn more please take a look at this presentation that we put together which showcases some of the more significant changes.
Please let us know what you think of the new design - it's all for your benefit so we hope you like it!
If you have any issues with the new site please submit a support ticket.
There needs to be an option for the old page. This new design looks nice but doesn't have nearly the same amount of data on the screen. How can I get the old page back??
Good Lord! What a shock! This is going to take some getting used to. Like going from Windows XP to Vista! Ok, ok, that was kinda mean. I'll have to poke around and try to figure it out. It is a big change. I did notice the small graphs next to current conditions, that is cool.
It would be VERY helpful for links on the blog page - bloggers names, blog links - to change color when clicked, as they did previously. It makes it much easier to find blogs where threads are being followed.
It appears that much less information is available per page, too. That's not a good change. The "clean look" is due to a lot of wasted space.

Ummmm... Where is my detailed 7 day NWS forecast? That's the first thing I always looked at ... Did somebody buy you out? You used to be unique. Now you look like all the other weather websites out there - made for the casual viewer.
I miss the old layout. ): I liked having the forecast all big and visible right next to the current conditions. Everything's harder to get to now.
I mean, I appreciate that you guys are trying to make it better, but the old layout was much prettier, and just all around simpler.
I come here and barely have to scroll to see everything I need in the morning, which is incredibly nice when you're in a hurry. This new one isn't that simple anymore. I dunno.
Also, I miss the highs & lows being red & blue. That was nice and simple as well.
I'm in agreement with Globe199. Please give us an option to have the old page again. It's what us loyalists here are all used to, and as I've mentioned, it truly is better.
Thanks! Amber L.

I think there should be an option for the old page back. I've used it for so long, and I think the presentation is better as far as information is concerned. It's not as fancy, but I think it was a case of less is more.
Oh... I don't like this at all! I liked having my favorites on the left. I don't care for the new, choppy, have-to-click-to-read forecasts. Hmmm, not to be a snot, but I think I'll start looking for a new weather source.
Been a regular user since 1998 and a paid user since 2002. I may re-think that decision now that the site doesn't offer what I need. This looks like the Weather Channel's site, right on down to the "Feels Like" terminology. PLEASE give us an option for the old site. It was far better for people who like to have lots of data available on one screen. Now there is wasted space along the left side where the Favorites used to be. I used to be able to quickly search them, now I can't. That was one of the best features of this site.
Please tell us now -- are these comments going to have any impact? Or should we save our breath?
p.s. why does my browser now continually connect to stationdata.wunderground.com?
I've just looked over the weather page and it is NOT as useful as the previous format. There's much less information readily available. I'm not pleased and will be looking for a site that gives me more complete weather information.

Man, the site change caught me off guard too. I didn't see any warning about it.
I loved the old design, and I don't like that it changed. Why can't you have an option for the old design? I knew where everything was, and I thought it was easy to use.
My opinion: Change it back or offer option to use old version
It's a change, but not for the better. I'd rather use the old layout. I don't like clicking on every single day to read the day and night forecasts. I don't care about hourly data, just want to be able to read the forecasts and see current data. Please bring back the old layout or give us the option of which layout to use. THE NEW LAYOUT STINKS! Less data, more fluff. It should be pretty simple being the layouts should all be driven by the same data servers.
I hate it. What is it like 10 pages of scrolling to get to the bottom now? The data presented is very narrow and wastes loads of horizontal screen space. I have loved and used wu for years but what has set you apart from the gooey designs that everyone else has is gone now.
This new format is horrible. Please switch it back. I'm all for change but the old format made more sense, had all the info I needed in one small area, and was far more organized than this haphazard mess.
There are two people to find here, the person who designed this monstrosity, and the person who approved it. Both need to find new jobs because this is one big ol fail.

At the end of the little tutorial..."If you experience ant problems, please email support@wunderground.com" Really? (No ant problems in this cold, anyway.)

I don't like it. At all. The radar is hidden, my favorite cities are now uselessly hidden in a narrow band at the top where I can't even see them all, much less any pertinent data about them. I'm no longer getting the information I'm used to, and can't even find where it's gone.
You might at least have warned us this was coming.

Do not like this at all!!! I guess I will have return to Weather.com. I loved the old layout. Very dissappointing :o( Google maps? please. I guess it happens to all the best of them.

don't like it one bit. AND, third word into the statement introducing the new look, you've used "your" incorrectly. You wrote "you're"... I had to read it three times to understand what you were saying. C'mon guys, basic grammar and composition. Very unprofessional, to say the least.

I do not like that I have to scroll down to find useful information now. The white space to the left and right is such a waste. Been using this site for years and I just want the old layout back (or give me the option to change it).

Wow. What made you take something that wasn't broke and then try to fix it?
You had a site that took advantage of a tremendous amount of real estate and provided key info in, literally, a split second. Daily. Hourly. Five-day. it was all right there. Now it isn't.
Will I get used to it? Maybe. Maybe not. But I'd have to agree with another poster who asks for the option to use the old layout.

WAY too much wasted (seriously blank white ~ or is that advertising space that's Thankfully blocked by AdBlock ?), from left to right, the info now takes up less than half the page, Forcing me to scroll down. Inefficient, frustrating and enough to make me look elsewhere for weather info. If I have to get used to a new format, I might as well find a site that doesn't MAKE me scroll for the information I want (5-day forecast being the biggie).
Now, since there's More than enough room for the "blocks" to side side by side, if you make that configurable, I can pull the info up that I want. Otherwise, this revision is a FAIL.
{edit} ~ yup, most of that dead space is advertising. I get that you need it, but you've Killed the efficiency of this page in favor of the advertisements. When people quit visiting because it's SO overpowering with ads, then there's less revenue. I'm off to find other weather pages that fit my wants and needs better.

It's a relief to know that you haven't removed any data. However, I haven't been able to find the rest of the NWS seven day text forecast, and I'm certain it used to be featured on the local weather page. All I see is the five day graphic and 18 hour text forecast.
But since you haven't removed anything, I know it must be there. Maybe somebody can direct me to it?
By the way, am I the only person on the planet who doesn't want to have my browser maximized all the time?

I liked the old layout much better. The information was easier to find in a smaller area. This new layout requires a lot of scrolling. I liked the current and week forecast right at the top before. I also liked having more recent cities.
Please give us an option for the older layout, it worked so well!

I agree with the others... give me the old option back or I'll find a new site. This new format gives me about a fifth the info the old one did. I could check 5 nearly locations as soon as the page opened. On the primary location I got the time since the last update. I got 5-6 days of verbal forecasts for the location. There was tons of other stuff below that.
If you changed because the old format was too costly, then say so. Don't pretend it's better. It looks like something typical 10 years ago. :(
A former fan of weatherunderground.

Don't recognize any of the regular WU photogs on this comment page. Seem a bit suspect. As far as the new look goes..."IF IT AIN'T BROKEN---DON'T FIX IT!!" I liked the old page much better!!

The reason I've used your site for so long was specifically because I liked the layout. I know change is hard to adapt to, but i have a feeling that I'll be finding another site, because you messed up all the stuff that was really important to me and don't appear to have bothered to ask your viewers what was really important to them. If you spent two years on these changes, then some Web designers got paid WAY too much money...especially since the ruined a good thing.
Just my two cents and it sounds like I'm not alone.

Perhaps I need to post a screenshot of what WU looks like on my widescreen monitor. Mind you, Fark.com experienced the same thing several years ago when they upgraded, so hopefully you all can sort this out.
Here you go, and this is a 21" monitor with only 1650x1080 res, I imagine it looks worse on an HD screen:
p.s.: lol, I just hit "preview" and the image of my screen is even cut off. Please fix! It's 2011, and most of us have widescreens! Thx
