Notice Anything Different?
Posted by: WunderPress, 2:04 AM GMT on February 02, 2011
You found your way to this blog so you've already seen the new design of wunderground.com and we hope that you like what you've seen so far.
This is the culmination of 2 years of development and planning with the goal to improve the user interface and make it even easier for our users to quickly surface the weather data that they are looking for.
In fact, you could argue that this is the culmination of 16 years hard work. As you know, we constantly launch new products and tools to enhance the service we provide to you all. Over the years we've added so much data to the back-end that we needed to reorganize the Site Architecture - a spring clean as it were.
This has helped us group all of our content into 7 main channels which in turn has led to the easier to use navigation of the new site. The simple new layout design presents the data in a more digestible format and appears less data heavy.
Rest assured, we have not taken away any of the data from the old site. To the contrary, it is now easier to quickly view a lot more weather data than before - especially on the city forecast pages where you now get an overview of the hourly forecasts without having to click to a new page.
There are too many new benefits to list them all - the load time is a lot faster than the previous version, we have new graphics such as spark lines that enable you to quickly view weather patterns and you can customize your city forecast page using the collapsable modules.
If you want to learn more please take a look at this presentation that we put together which showcases some of the more significant changes.
Please let us know what you think of the new design - it's all for your benefit so we hope you like it!
If you have any issues with the new site please submit a support ticket.
I, too, dislike the new format and will be sticking with the classic format - if it disappears, I'll find another weather site. The new format is too narrow, and requires too much scrolling to see anything useful.

This WAS the best weather website on the web. My go-to for travel and marine weather up and down the west coast. I do not appreciate the new site format. No emotion, no ranting and raving, if the classic site goes away so will I. Glad I saw this before I subscribed.
Yep, the new site is far less useful. Let's face it, weatherunderground consumers are serious weather consumers, they want to see lots of data on one page and can consume it because they already know the context for everything that is displayed. The new site makes it slower to see all the data. I'm sure folks would learn where to click, but why would I want to do that?
The new site follows the current trend of tabbed browsing... which is great as long as the task you want to complete is not a comparison between information from two different sites. Comparison is exactly what weatherunderground users are doing. I always look at the forecasts and then look at the radar and the maps to see if my own analysis agrees with the "experts" and the models. Now I have to go back & forth between tabs to make comparisons. Not my preference.

Wow, I just discovered that the Classic option is available (how did I miss that last night - was it there from the start?) I am very happy now! Please continue to provide the Classic WU view forever!

If it ain't broke don't fix it!!! Didn't you people learn anything from your mama? Please make this chaotic mess user friendly or I will go to another web site for my weather needs!
I like new things. This is kind of fun. What I DO MISS is the wonderphoto thumbnail right there when come to the site. That's how I come across 99% of the photos I comment on.

I want to see the current temp, the radar map and the week's forecast, no interest in the rest of the stuff cluttering up the page.
Spent 10 minutes trying to get rid of the garbage like "weather events" and "weather summary" to get some screen space back but they won't go away.
Figured out how to collapse some of the unwanted info in the "current conditions" column but even on a 26 inch monitor at 1920x1200 I still have to scroll to see what I used to get at a glance.
On my laptop the site is completely worthless, no amount of tweaking makes it usable.
Switched both machines to the classic site and will stay with that as long as it is available. I'm seriously considering not renewing my subscription and just using AdBlock to clean out the ads from the free version or moving to another service.
I can't imagine who you talked to that liked the new design but they are welcome to it.

I don't like having to scroll down to get the detailed local forecast. The content on the upper right and that on the lower half of the page need to trade places. I don't care about world weather events and Kari Kiefer's weather summary as much as I do about the local info. Keep the local 5-day forecast content on the top half ("above the fold" in newspaper lingo), and put the broader general national/world info down below. In this way, the classic was better.
Frankly I liked the old format much better. It was quite functional. This new page looks a lot like the Weather Channel local forecast pages.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!! Didn't these people learn anthing from their mama??? This new site is total chaos! Where is the help button??? How do you move the sections up or down to my preferences??? If this site is not returned to its original version I will find my weather needs at another web site!!
First i am a big fan of Weather underground, and have been a paying subscriber for a few years now. I appreciate your trying to keep things fresh, but with this latest effort you did not do a great job making it useful. I agree with the usability professional. But here are some specific observations to help you understand the negative reactions. The details for today/tonight should be up by the current conditions, preferably where the relatively useless weather events appears - the discussion is nice, but the intermediate level of detail for today and tonight needs to be right there with current conditions and the one word throwaway forecast for the today tonight and tomorrow appears. You say there is more data but it is not compact. There is all sorts of wasted space. The current conditions doesn't even fit on a 1280 x 1024 screen. On a widescreen display, half the screen is wasted. I realize people are moving away from frames with selections, but that was a good place for favorites and the wunderphotos, which I do not like to have to scroll down to see. The current placement of favorites shows just 5 with the conditions Icon and temp. Too minimalist. And, if it's that limited in what fits, it's pretty stupid to show my home location among the favorites when I'm viewing that location. I appreciate that your message about the new site allowed me to go to the classic view, but when I click on that it does not keep me on my location. Inconsiderate. Classic should already be a view available like lite, mobile and ipod or something that can be set as a preference.
I don't like the new site at all. As long as the classic view is still available, I continue to use Weather Underground.
If this is the culmination of 2 years of development and planning, I would think the deign could have been much better. Perhaps you should consider changing our design team.
I like it. Once I got used to seeing where my info had been moved too, and realized that a lot of things had no been combined, I really enjoyed the changes. Now I have less pages to click though, with the same info I needed, and it's all in a better format now. Good job guys, definitely a thumbs up on this one.

I like the new design and it is most likely easier for developers to update and improve than the previous antiquated platform/code. This will allow for more changes on the fly with shorter turnaround, translating into better service for their customers.
The layout is different but the vast majority of the data is still available. Certain posts on here are vague and empty complaints. This should be a discussion about where to go to find relocated information.
Change isn’t something most people deal with very well. But over time it becomes easier and there will be acceptance.
One issue I found that maybe someone can help with: the “Public Information Statement” link that shows up on a location’s main page during a severe weather advisory seems to have prematurely disappeared from the top of the page. Following a storm this statement is posted and contains storm totals and observations. The winter storm warning has expired and now the “Public Information Statement” is no longer accessible from the location’s main page. My location is 05301. This seems to be a bug – the “Public Information Statement” link should remain for a period of time even after the expiration of the storm warning. A roundabout way to access the storm totals and observations is found at: http://www.wunderground.com/severe.asp and then scrolling to the county of interest.
Thank you to the developers for their continued hard work.

I love the new site and I hope you keep it that way! It is much easier to see and use and it loads twice as fast as the old one. It looks fantastic! Congratulations on a great site!

This new site was not properly tested and it should have been previewed rather just sprung on your users. This implementation makes you look very unprofessional! I do not mind the new format. It is different but not better from my user point of view. I am not sure why it needed to be changed. My largest complaint is that there are many features that just do not work or do not work correctly. I opened a trouble ticket on some and encourage others to do likewise. I report weather for my local community and I actually had two phone calls from neighbors wanting to know what the (bleep) happened to "my" weather site. Very disappointed ... Dataman

I have quickly lost interest in the "new" view. I have subscribed for years because WU was the best weather site hands down. As long as the Classic view is available, I'll stick with it. If the Classic view fades away ... so will I.

While I appreciate the effort and time spent to redo the site, I much prefer the old style...classic and will continue to use that for as long as allowed. The new format is just too difficult to navaigate.

The "Weather Events" box on the right near the top is just fluff and should not get top billing. It wastes a lot of space.
The "Weather Summary" box on the right needs a date/time that it was authored/updated. Otherwise you don't know if it is fresh or 36 hours old.
It would be nice if responders waited a little while to get used to the new format before flaming, but some of the comments are probably valid, like too much white space.
Regarding the 5 day forecast. It attempts to characterize the weather for a whole day with a single icon and a single word (eg Clear or Ice Pellets). It is my experience that it is impossible to describe the day's weather meaningfully that way. You need at least a sentence or 2. The classic view has those sentences easily seen, just below the 5 day forecast. I haven't found where those descriptions have gone in the new format. Maybe they are gone.
I have to love all the comments from people who rarely post even if I disagree with most. I like the new set up. I like how my current local weather is right on the front screen as that is the first thing I always look at when I come here. I like the drop down format as now what I look for is easily a click away. I like the larger box format to blog in. I also like that they reinstated this blog as taking it down was a sign of no class. Take your lumps Yakuza, just know you did a good job

Not to bad. Maybe a few tweaks here and there, like a photo on the page. It is a shame that most people will not even give it a try. If you do not like something give constructive ideas, don't just whine. I think it looks good and has a good feel to it.

To those complaining that their 10 buck membership somehow gives them ownership in this site and necessitates their prior forewarning and approval, get a freaking grip. 10 bucks gets you longer radar loops and no advertisements. Nothing else!

I love it! I think it's 100% better than the old one and much nicer appearance. If you take some time to play around with it you'll find everything that was on the old one, but much easier to find and read. Nice work!

I hate it. I registered just so I could post this. The new format is impossible to find my way around. I can't find things like regional maps at all. So I'm bookmarking Classic View and/or looking for another weather site.
But that's not the worst thing about it. You switched to it, without warning, in the midst of one of the worst storms in history. It was Chicago's worst blizzard ever, and now it's headed east. People are relying on the information here for their survival. We don't have time to go figure out a new format, or even go searching for what happened to it or a link to Classic View, at the exact moment that it was snowing 3"/hour and wind was howling at 66MPH and thousands of people were stuck in their cars in Chicago. The timing was horrible, and you should make Classic View the default for the forseeable future.
You can post a prominent link at the top of the (hopefully returned to default) Classic View to the "New beta-test view" so we can comment on it and get it improved in a measured, rational way, instead of scrambling desperately to cope with it in the middle of one of the worst storms ever. You just don't do things like that.

I'm willing to give this a chance for a few days, but my first reaction is not a good one. I think it would have been a good idea to have someone who actually uses weather sites on the web dev team. I think this site design came from folks who like the new web technologies but don't care or understand much about weather information.

Congratulations on your great re-design of WeatherUnderground. I love the new, clean and modern design. It is VERY easy to navigate on the site and one can select an abundance of information quickly and easily. I don't understand people complaining just because it's a new look and they don't have the patience to spend a few minutes to familiarize themselves with the new design. Job well done!
This is quite possibly the worst site redesign since Digg, and we saw the horrible effect that had. The best thing Weather Underground could do is make the Classic view the default, at least until they re-think the update. Of course, my opinion is if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I too am a paying member who HATES the new design... and I've been trying to get used to it all day. It was an absolute waste of my money. Rather than have everything I need at a glance, my favorites, the few that are shown, are stretched out horizontally, where it's hard to compare the temperatures. And I have to scroll to see them all. I miss the daily on the right and the quickly viewed synopsis of today. Let me be able to select the Classic view as default permanently.
Like sunrise and sunset time being shown in first screen. But I terribly miss the seven days of advance forecasts. five days is not enough. Ideal would be 8 days, today and the same day a week from now. Why stop at five. 10 unnecessary. So, for now I'm always clicking into "classic view," which loads the national map, not my local page. Why the extra click, as you know where I'm starting from.
I wonder whose job it is to read all these complaints and categorize them. It's a very, very important job. Remember "New Coke."
I don't like this new format, at all! I will be sticking with the classic view and I appreciate being allowed this option. I like my favorites to be viewed all at once and not have to scroll through them. I like to see at a glance where all my loved ones reside and what their weather is like and some of my favorite places to visit!
If there is someway to be able to change this, I might consider using it but not until then!!!
I think it looks very boring. No eye catching appeal at all!

Sorry but this new design is awful. The old design was very efficient in its design and one of the reasons why I went to this site. Changing just to change is a bad idea, especially when you had a great design to begin with. Compare the new format for the city forecast to the old format. The new one is much harder to read, stuff is spread out all over the place.
