Notice Anything Different?
Posted by: WunderPress, 2:04 AM GMT on February 02, 2011
You found your way to this blog so you've already seen the new design of wunderground.com and we hope that you like what you've seen so far.
This is the culmination of 2 years of development and planning with the goal to improve the user interface and make it even easier for our users to quickly surface the weather data that they are looking for.
In fact, you could argue that this is the culmination of 16 years hard work. As you know, we constantly launch new products and tools to enhance the service we provide to you all. Over the years we've added so much data to the back-end that we needed to reorganize the Site Architecture - a spring clean as it were.
This has helped us group all of our content into 7 main channels which in turn has led to the easier to use navigation of the new site. The simple new layout design presents the data in a more digestible format and appears less data heavy.
Rest assured, we have not taken away any of the data from the old site. To the contrary, it is now easier to quickly view a lot more weather data than before - especially on the city forecast pages where you now get an overview of the hourly forecasts without having to click to a new page.
There are too many new benefits to list them all - the load time is a lot faster than the previous version, we have new graphics such as spark lines that enable you to quickly view weather patterns and you can customize your city forecast page using the collapsable modules.
If you want to learn more please take a look at this presentation that we put together which showcases some of the more significant changes.
Please let us know what you think of the new design - it's all for your benefit so we hope you like it!
If you have any issues with the new site please submit a support ticket.
There may well be more information in the new-and-improved WeatherUnderground display. I can't say and really don't care. The information I want, and use this site for, is spread over two or three times as much area if it is still there at all. Worse, the new window is almost disturbingly busy.
On the Classic page, I could see the current weather details (temp, wind chill, wind speed & direction, and so forth), the local radar, and the next few days predictions, all at a glance.
Under the new regime, the five day forecast is half way down the browser page so I can't see it without scrolling the window, the radar is barely visible at the bottom of the window, and I still haven't found some of the other information that used to be under Current Conditions. On the other hand, there is a world weather events image I have no interest whatsoever in seeing, and a Weather Summary 'midday recap' covering the entire country whether I am interested or not.
What on earth were you trying to do? When I pull up the weather in my local area, I want the weather in my local area. I really don't care that the world low temp is somewhere in Siberia, and it is of minimal interest that Australia is dealing with a tropical storm.

Cute but the old style was better. Too much wasted space. Old site had everything available on the first load. No need to scrool all over to find information.
Nice try, but go back to the drawing board.

I'm fairly new to WU so I don't mind the change as much as the regulars here. It's nice that we still have access to the old version if the need arises.

"an abomination" - lol its a format reflective of what has become a "standard" in style. Every part of it has a precedent. Its probably one of the more boring and conservative updates I vae seen and is long overdue.
Higher thinkers. Hmm I would look at what is offered and be specific in my requests.
It seems the technology outpaced many of the people here that were just coming for a Internet provided direct observation of current conditions. And thats all.
Perhaps you should not be ashamed and ask for that too.
You should give impressions and suggestions and hyperbole is not either. If you want a more customizable site based in direct observation. Say so. And frame it properly.
There certainly isn't anything wrong with that at all.
Quoting SolarPower: Please push out revision 2.01 quickly with the following improvements: 1. Remove your celebrity meteorologists and their national forecast 3. Give me the old details and not pretty icons on the 5-day forecast.
Not having the 5-day details easily visible (in English) without clicks/scrolls is not an improvement.
This new site sucks. And to make things worse when i enter the classic website and save the link it still reverts to the "?new improved" site. I will not subscribe again to wu.

Quoting JFLORIDA: 760 as the old version is available cant other people have a say. Or was not allowing that your "point" too.
Of course they can. Did anyone say they could not?
gasp you're the forum cop! Don't deny it!! I bet you drive 2 miles an hour below the speed limit and sit in the left lane on major highways don't you! You.. I KNEW IT!!!
I spent several hours during the day, on the "new improved" version. I do not think that there is any improvement, at all. In fact, there are several things wrong with the new site, IMO. I am going back to the old version, and trust it will remain the way it is....

The following list comprises the "Rules of the Road"
1. Keep it civil. Personal attacks, bickering, flaming, and general trollish behavior will not be tolerated. Disagreements are fine, but keep them civil and short. 2. Stay on topic. 3. No monomania. 4. No hot linking external or copyright images without the image owner's permission. 5. Do not circumvent a ban. Most bans last 24 hours or less, please accept the ban. If you create a new username to circumvent a ban, you will be blocked from the site completely. 6. No comments that contain only personal notes such as, "Good Morning!", or "You've got mail, X". 7. Do not "1st!", "1st post!", or any of the numerical/linguistic derivatives. This is a worthless use of blog space. 8. No spamming. 9. No spamming. 10. Seriously, no spamming. Spamming includes but is not limited to, trying to sell products, trying to solicit traffic for your own blog, trying to solicit traffic for other commercial entities, etc. Do not post links to your own site unless they are directly relevant and even then, use sparingly.
Tips
Do not enter games of oneupmanship with trolls or bloggers you find to be annoying. You will be banned along side them, as your verbal jousts consume the space and time everyone else is sharing. If you come across a troll or another blogger whom you find to be irritating, please use the site reporting tools and your ignore list.

They attempted to give a more integrated approach to newer trends.
Perhaps you should not be ashamed and ask for the previous approach too as a option.
You should give impressions and suggestions and hyperbole is not either. If you want a more customizable site based in direct observation. Say so. And frame it properly.

If only you could offer something intelligent or useful to this discussion - instead you are just mindlessly taking the other side. There has been nothing offered by you in direct support of the usability of the new site layout - do you even know how to gather and analyze weather data? Read a TAF or PIREP?
The negative opinions about the new design are all from generally knowledgeable people expressing legitimate gripes on how unusable the new site design is for sophisticated technically minded users.
I really like the new, updated Wunderground. At first I was not sure about it but the more I looked, the more I liked all the updates. Thank you very much.

The new site is horrendous and what is worse is that I can no longer select the old site. If you make a change, it should be optional. Once I selected "close" where you can select the "classic page" there appears to be no way I can access the classic page. I have been a subscriber for several years but I will not renew my subscription unless this issue is corrected. Why not make the display page you like be an option on the settings page.
1) Please put back the dual time zones... used to be when you pulled up a city halfway around the world, the Wx display there would show local time and also "Your Time" -- the user's "home" time... a great help when traveling! 2) I agree with other users that what is displayed on the opening screen (without scrolling) is very important. I, too, miss seeing the 5-Day Forecast on the opening screen. Also agree with too much empty space. I realize you have to fit in your advertising, but the old layout was closer to a "Heads-up" display...
What what is the argument - you want more options - a denser display more display of current conditions.
I talked about:
New modeling, more info in PWS, more blog correction space, links to social media, slightly bigger radar, records area, the beginnings of customization, new blog tools. more embedded linking to products.
Thats all ive worked with. Like I said it could be better.
and then you make a quip about people who wont accept change and yet you seem to embrace it while kicking and screaming. That was HIS point!
Its better and more clear. I just have a few small grumbles. 1. In the astronomy you can't select extended view as a default, I am always interested in the azimuth of the sun each day, this was automatic on the old system. 2. You need to correct our latitude, Auckland city is 36.8S (36, 49S) not 37, also the airport is exposed and your temperatures are always 3 or 4 less than in Auckland city. 3. I also don't like it when you round 69.8f down to 69 instead of 70f, here in Auckland, 21c is a common temperature and if it gets to 21 it usually goes over it (Like 21.7c) and yet its rounded down to 69f and further rounded down to 20c, yet I noticed with American cities these temperatures arte rounded up eg (New York has a high of 22c, and it will be 21.1c). 4. You seem to report rainy days here when is none recorded, there was no rain in January until the 16th. 5. Why don't you introduce a showers and a sun/showers icon, Its very negative when one tiny shower between 11.40pm and 1am makes 2 wet rain days in a row.
But I love your extremes chart and finding out where the hottest and coldest parts of the World

If "the load time is a lot faster," how come I had time to read all the comments on this page while waiting for the presentation video to load, and it never did play? At least this is an improvement over the first time I clicked on "Notice anything new?" and got the message that "This entry has been removed." How very helpful! I really can't make any judgment on the new format -- the Wunderphotos section is where I spend most of my time -- since it's so full of bugs that I can't make it do what it used to. Once the glitches have been worked out, maybe then I can form an opinion.

All sites harvest your IP info, but throwing it in my face isn't necessary. Just because I go to your site doesn't mean I want info for the city you think I'm in (which isn't even correct if I'm using a VPN). I realize this IP harvesting and serving up of unrequested web pages goes along with your new 'targeted' advertising. Advertisers want to be able to offer readers merchandise based on their locale (and weather there) and targeted advertising is a hot revenue source. Money drives all business decisions, not just this one about this site. What your strategy team missed was the fact that if you lose clicks because people won't use the new site, all those new partnerships are out the window and so is the money.
When using the Classic ver, I find that if I "sign out" so I can turn off cookies, you send me to the new site (away from 'classic') and a weather page for the City you think I'm in. Just leave me where I was -- don't do _anything_ and especially don't send me back to your new site because it's not something I'm willing to waste time on. I use your site for more than just my _own_ weather.
Also, I began noticing a few days before the changeover to your new site that load times were longer. I thought it was just me, until tonight when I noticed you have the new site set to load faster and the old -- now 'classic' -- site has been made slower. All the better to push us toward the new site and all those advertisers . . .
For all those who are whining that 'some people can't deal with change', think again . . . good change is good; dysfunctional counter-productive change isn't. BTW there are forums all over the 'net which are trashing this new design, not just this one . . .
How long will you keep 'classic' view available? My guess would be until about the time you start pushing out video advertising.
I think I like the new layout. It's not as busy as the old layout, and my old eyes can find data easier.
I haven't been a long time user, nor am I a weather "buff". I travel for business, a lot. I tend to use Weather Underground as the place to see what the weather will be, where I'm going to be.
The new layout still provides the data I need, and seems to be easier to use.
Just keep up the most excellent prognostications, no matter how the site is constructed.
Quoting aalto: Cute but the old style was better. Too much wasted space. Old site had everything available on the first load. No need to scrool all over to find information.
Yes, at first I thought, "what happened??", but that is just because I was so used to what was here before. Look around a bit, there is a good bit more info available right off. If you will pay attention, everything is here that was before, and more. Furthermore, it takes the same number or fewer clicks to get to it. Finally, it does seem to load faster, and respond better to me.
As for being flashy without substance, it seems actually a bit plain and restrained compared to the old way for the most part. Definitely a conservative upgrade. I think it an improvement. Maybe not a huge one, but better. Once I have used it a few days it will be fine. Might be some hidden things I haven't run across yet as well. Definitely not a tremendous change. Like a few have said, if anything we might have hoped for a bit more from a complete overhaul. I am not complaining though. So many changes are for the worse on my favorite web sites, and in this case they avoided that by providing a genuine if small improvement.

Not going to spend a lot of time reading the rehashes - Old guy here - I like it - and I'll get used to the changes - and, you ALL know, these folks will keep right on improving as we go. Best weather site going.

I feel like this redesign was a big step backwards for Wunderground. On the local forecast page -where I spend the most time - there is significantly less useful information available to me in the initial view. A substantial portion of the display is now filled with "World Weather Events" (about which it would hard to care less) and the current Weather Summary. I really don't want to see either of those things most of the time. More space is also now occupied by the menus and whatnot at the top of the page.
There were plenty of things that I thought could have been improved on the old local forecast page, but I don't think any of them were addressed in this redesign. I'm disappointed that Wunderground would make a change this big without any effort to engage its longtime members in the redesign process.

I'm disappointed in the new site, too. Here are my suggestions:
1. Bring back the five-day text forecast. Put it in the spot now occupied by the Weather Events and Weather Summary. Push those two elements way down on the page. I use Weather Underground for local information, and it's a great source for it. Don't downplay it. Play it up!
2. Make the font darker and bigger. The new site is harder to read than the old one, especially the smaller font-sized data.
3. Add a customization feature so people can move elements around as they wish.
4. Make the favorite cities more prominent. These are places that users are interested in. They shouldn't be tucked away in tiny type way at the top

KEEP THE OLD SITE ACTIVE!!!! I ride a motorcycle daily and rely on this site for my weather as the other weather sites just plain suck. They are big into useless graphics that do not tell me anything and are usually hours behind. At least with this site I could pull up a selections of maps and make my decisions based on what I found here. I also liked the initial pages layout as everything I needed was there on one page and the text forecasts are usually accurate.

The new site's terrific--it's so much less cluttered than the old, and it looks less amateurish.
I love the fact that less space is taken up by advertising. And the extra white space makes it so much easier to read and to find what I'm looking for. The subdued icon set and softened color scheme helps, too. I can find the moon phases if I want them, but they aren't hollering at me and trying to hijack my attention. The whole design is so much less distracting and so much more intelligible now.
Nice work!

As with any update it is a shock at first and the first impression is not to good. As others have said, the old site had much more info at first glance. I also miss the severe weather statements and such being on the first page. I dont like all the scrolling. I also have not located the fire weather. I realize not many people use it regularly, its a niche, but for those of us that do it was nice to have. My advice, listen to the comments and suggestions and try again. WU was the best weather site PLEASE keep it that way.
