Notice Anything Different?
Posted by: WunderPress, 2:04 AM GMT on February 02, 2011
You found your way to this blog so you've already seen the new design of wunderground.com and we hope that you like what you've seen so far.
This is the culmination of 2 years of development and planning with the goal to improve the user interface and make it even easier for our users to quickly surface the weather data that they are looking for.
In fact, you could argue that this is the culmination of 16 years hard work. As you know, we constantly launch new products and tools to enhance the service we provide to you all. Over the years we've added so much data to the back-end that we needed to reorganize the Site Architecture - a spring clean as it were.
This has helped us group all of our content into 7 main channels which in turn has led to the easier to use navigation of the new site. The simple new layout design presents the data in a more digestible format and appears less data heavy.
Rest assured, we have not taken away any of the data from the old site. To the contrary, it is now easier to quickly view a lot more weather data than before - especially on the city forecast pages where you now get an overview of the hourly forecasts without having to click to a new page.
There are too many new benefits to list them all - the load time is a lot faster than the previous version, we have new graphics such as spark lines that enable you to quickly view weather patterns and you can customize your city forecast page using the collapsable modules.
If you want to learn more please take a look at this presentation that we put together which showcases some of the more significant changes.
Please let us know what you think of the new design - it's all for your benefit so we hope you like it!
If you have any issues with the new site please submit a support ticket.
I aggree w/ 857.DREM - "if it"s not broke, don't fix it" R & D to your hearts content but offer the "new" format as an option to switch to, not as "fixed" when I log on then have to switch to the classic. When I bought onto the underground I bought the classic format. Listen to your customers and learn.
End transmission

Quoting JFLORIDA: Its actually outstanding especially with he closest station display on down the page.
ALSO : make sure "rapid fire" is on and the array automatically updates.
You have to use it a bit then its incredibly well done.
You have to set in and use the favorites at the top or you really miss the best of it.
Stop spamming. Those who like the site like it those who don't don't. Stop trying to convince everyone. You remind me of a fairy tale Bible thumping troglodyte. Seriously though I think I love you!
Another longtime paying customer who does not like the new look. Now it's just as sucky as TWC's site. Please don't take WU Classic away, so I can keep using it.
The new look might be OK if the user could truly customize it. I don't give a rat's about current Weather Events - at least, not enough that it should be up top. Slightly shrinking some boxes is not as useful as letting me decide what I want to see in the first screenful. Classic view had everything I wanted without scrolling: 5 day forecast, radar, current conditions, I could see more of my Favorite Cities down the left side.
Boo.

Thanks for the extra work today, I have to find a new weather site with a forecast that is more percise than " a chance o snow", for our morning meetings.

Like they say -- if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Very small print for the city/location on the top of the page, unable to find with out scrolling left or right -- we have family members scattered from CA to NY. Plenty of room on the left side of the page where it's been for years. Please let us keep the classic screen. Otherwise, we plan to unsubscribe. We liked it years ago or would not have paid for Wunderground several years.
OK, I checked out the "new" vs the "classic". I don't see that things load any faster now, and I don't see any improvement in the information provided. How do I select "classic" as my default view so I don't have to waste time looking at less revelant content?
(amusing that you use the Coke terms for their product improvement disaster)

I can't say I hate the new site. However, I have noticed that the radar no longer automatically updates like the previous did. There was a seconds countdown timer that would update the radar every 6 minutes whether you were in animation or not.
I'd love to see that back!

UGH!! Like the old "Classic" site much better. Coke changed their formula decades ago, and I've drunk Pepsi ever since. Get my drift????

Leave well enough alone i want the old site stick the new one well you know where. I did not pay for this crap! If this is all we can have will not be paying this year!
There will be those that, faced with a new unfamiliar interface, will feel like there favorite slippers have been thrown out in the trash while they weren't looking. After a few extended sessions the warm and fuzzys will come back and all will be well again. I've never taken the opportunity to express my pleasure with your site and the vast amount of information I find easily accessible that seems to be missing from other sites. Keep up the good work!

In an attempt to be constructive, here are three things that I don't like about the new site: 1) My list of favorite cities does not fit across the top of the page. 2) I miss seeing the photos. 3) There is too much wasted (empty) space.
Something I do like is the "Station select" button. Also, the weather event map. However, I will be using the old site. It is way better and worth the money.

Long time user and I could get to like the new design if it were BIGGER. What is the purpose of half a combined page of nothing but white! Sure glade I got my new prescription glasses. Obviously you have some very young people designing the new look, as for us older folks who need reading glasses, well they are sure getting a work out.
Quoting Nevis1: 9 year member is upset about the new style. Bring back the old style or give me a refund and I will move on to Accu-Weather Premium...God forbid

It has to do with things other than the shock of change - it has to do with colors, readability, and being force fed silly content like the summary.

I'm very disappointed in the new site. As a casual but frequent user of WU I use the site to check the forecast several times a day at work and to help plan for days ahead. I don't need all the wonderful weather statistics and great quantity of information that you CAN provide. The old website gave me all the informatiion I needed as soon as it downloaded: Current temp and condition, radar, and a six day extended detailed forcast all near the top of the page.Just because you can provide all those nifty features does not make it better. Maybe you could provide that page as an option for the weather geeks but I prefer the old page to give the information I really need on a daily basis.

I talked to 25 people who use wunderground , they all agree that the new look is awful.

Quoting Scxxxx: The new site is really bad (just the fact that it's washed out and unreadable is obvious). I'm an IT architect, and I can see that a bunch of consultants really sold you on the need to 'update' your look (translation--pay us lots of money). You got suckered.
Sorry for you. Go back to your roots, make incremental improvements, and learn the concept of UAT (user acceptance testing), cause you sure as sh*t don't understand it now.
Absolutely on target! At the very least, WU should have made the new design an OPTION for months and collected feedback, made any needed changes, etc. And I would love to know who did the usability testing on this - so that I never recommend that firm to my own clients!!

Like most others it seems, I much prefered the old look. Had all the info I wanted at a glance. Now I see lots of white screen. This reminds me of all the 'upgrades' I get at work from my IT department, which usually results in things becoming more restricted or not working anymore. 'Upgrade' - right...

Well, the consensus is, go back to the classic design. I concur. I also have been a member since the beginning and I vote against the "New Coke". My fear is, that you will take away the option of the "classic" format. Please do not. For all of those who put hard work into this project, I am sorry, but listen to your members!

I agree with most everyone...go back to the classic design. I am going to change my default to classic. I hope you listen to all the feedback, the paying membership.

I'm in "classic mode" presently -- if they pull that... guess I won't re-new $ --
I've learned on this site as well as life -- My Barn My Rules same goes here
if we're not happy -- we have the door *sigh*
EVERYTHING IS A BUSINESS MODEL these days - same here -- our voices are nothing compared to the advertising revenue.....just saying that's what has a voice here - pity WU forgets it's grassroots beginning

The biggest problem is if Wunderground stops making any improvements to the "classic" which appears to be the likely scenario. Sure, it is there now but without any improvements to it will start to become dated looking as it already is. Will there even be new features added to it?
I have found that the tutorial is very informative and I'm thinking everyone should give it try.
I'm excited about the new changes. It is very "white" but I'm going to give myself a chance to get used to it. Maybe if we could customize the color/pic of background or move the radar pic up higher...

My knee jerk response was negative when I saw Wunderground was different. I was reassured when I saw that there was still access to the class site.
However, It only took me a few minutes to get the feel for the new version of the site and I have to admit it looks much better and the information is streamlined.
I never thought the old site was "broke" so to speak but it was pretty cluttered looking. I've noticed a lot of complaints so I'm not sure if I'm in the minority. I just wanted to let everyone at Wunderground know I apprieciate the work that went into the new layout and improvements.
Great job! :)

I have created this account just so that I can also add a comment on the new layout.
While I don't dislike the new icons and look, I feel you have failed to understand how many folk use the site.
The old style had current conditions, the radar, and the forecast all visible on the home page. The new style has only current conditions visible; one must scroll down for the radar and scroll down more for the forecast. This is a serious mis-feature, if you ask me.
At the same time, you've set the CSS to fix the width at 1024 or so, thus creating wide blank wasted spaces left and right on many screens and also making it hard to use on screens that are smaller. You also have a large banner ad beneath the masthead and before any useful data and a large square ad to the right of the current conditions data, both of these are also wasting more space. While I realize you are an ad-supported site, if you give me a home page that is 40% adverts and only a small amount of useful data before I scroll around, I have to tell you, I won't be coming back to look much more.
Even turning on ad blocking, while that does lose the banner ad and the data below does move up, the square ad just becomes an unfilled blank space, and it is still not possible to fill the screen with actually useful weather data.
I would suggest: - use a page width of "100%" in the CSS (or at least 95% if you must have a border), rather than fixing a size that wastes space - lose the big square ad that is now to the right of the current conditions - bring the forecast box back up to the top of the page - bring the radar back up, too - make the banner ad smaller (460x90 is more than big enough) and move it up into the masthead, rather than having it in the "data area"
Keep your focus on functionality and useful data content, rather than wasting screen space and including too many adverts.
Thanks for reading.

I'm not sure about the new site. I'm still using the classic (thank you for leaving the link available).
A couple of years ago, I spoke to the WU planning team about adding SURF REPORTS for all us surfers. I was told it was in the planning stage and that it would eventually happen. I am disappointed that the new site does not include surf reports or cams on either the SPORTS or MARINE links.
I really like the new format. It takes a few minutes to get used to where the weather data now reside, but much of what I need is still close at hand. Yeah, as others have commented, the old site was just fine but the new one loads much faster for me, a big advantage when you live on a ranch and your "high speed" internet is like comparing the speed of horse to a donkey. We're still waiting for the steam engine. Great work Wunderground. Let me apologize for anyone so rude as to compare you to TWC.................g

FALSE!!! I will not learn to like something that does not work for me, especially if I am paying for it! There are many things that do not work for me now! I came here originally because I liked the layout, design, and accuracy! With the new design, all you have is the accuracy, if you can find it!
People need to stop saying that this is a resistance to change situation. It is a resistance to changes that do not improve the experience! The new design is horrible. I tried to use it, and I was able to find everything finally, but I like it all of one page. I like my favorite cities on the left and I like the comprehensive layout!
All I ask is that the people saying it is resistance to change, please get off it! I accept and generally like change, as long as it is an improvement. This update takes a functional, readable format and makes it faded, smaller, and a huge waste of space that requires multiple clicks just to see what was all on one page before!
Please Leave the "Classic" available so I can stay here. I love WU and I have been a paid member for years! I will leave as soon as the Classic View is no longer available.

Boy was I glad I could google WU Classic view and find the link.
Having to search for all the data that was on the first page sucks. Uptodat conditions should be on the first page along with the 7 day forcast. The site is like every other cheaply done tabbed site. This is not 2 years in the maikng, if it is someone needs to get fired. The site looks really cheap now and hard to read.
If the classic view goes away I will switch to NOAA or use Weatherbug more. At least weatherbug i can get realtime conditions on my desktop and NOAA has great detail.
I used to be a paying chustomer, now I may become an ex viewer.

The classic version was cluttered, but all I wanted was all in the top 2" of the page. Yes, the new version looks nice, but I prefer the classic for my uses. Thanks for keeping this up and running.

As someone with a personal weather station that has been listed on WU for a few years, I have to say that my initial reaction to the new site was that it sucked. However, after some in-depth exploring yesterday, I find that I do like it much better than the "classic" site. I will divide my constructive criticism into likes and dislikes.
Likes: 1) The more modern, open, airy design is an improvement. White space is not bad. (I used to be a graphic designer) 2) Data is organized in a more logical manner now. 3) The clickable nature of the 5-day forecast is great. 4) It's nice to have the windchill or "feels like" next to the current temp in the "current conditions" and weather station sections. However, it still does not update as often as the temp or wind values. 5) The station select button is cool.
Dislikes: 1) The "weather events" and "weather summary" sections are a waste of space. I think the vast majority of people log onto WU for their local conditions or conditions in their favorite cities. I get national and international weather info from other sources. It would be nice if that info were in a separate secion that could be expanded or contracted so we didn't have to see it. 2) More space is needed for "favorite cities" 3) The type style is too light. Something just a little heavier would be easier to read. 4) Bring back the elevation column in the personal station section. Not everyone lives in the flatlands. 5) Time updated should be closer to the current temp in the current conditions section.
All things considered, I believe WU is on the right track with the re-design. Thanks for the work.
I like the new look.. People, if there's something you don't like about it, just make a suggestion instead of trashing it. Some people worked hard on this and are just trying to make it better... I'm sure they'll listen.
Wow...if this is all you've got to whine about consider yourself blessed. I'm sure the homeless folks sleeping on the streets this Winter would settle for either format...if they had a computer. So sit your ass down in front of your computer or whatever device you're fortunate to have in front of you, chill out and most of all, shut the hell up.
