Unique Weather Tool Provides Users with a Powder Potential Index to Help Find the Best Conditions for Skiing and Snowboarding

SAN FRANCISCO, February 25, 2011 – Weather Underground, the world’s first online weather service, announced today the availability of Powder Predictor™, a first of its kind weather tool that forecasts the powder quality of expected snowfall in the U.S. and Canada.

This revolutionary new tool pinpoints where the fluffiest powder is likely to fall over the coming 5 days. Essentially the tool projects the powder potential by calculating the inches of snowfall that would be required to produce an inch of liquid when melted. A higher index therefore means fluffier snow, as there will be less water content in each inch of snowfall. A low index predicts more slushy snow with higher water content.

The powder potential is displayed as a layer on wunderground.com’s interactive ski map that also plots all major ski resorts across North America. Users can zoom in to any ski area and view which resorts are likely to provide the best powder. Users can also click on another layer that will plot the actual amount of forecasted snowfall. The map control panel includes a forecast slider to select different forecast ranges.

Weather Underground’s meteorologists have utilized state-of-the-art research on snowflake physics to determine the likely density of snowflake water content as snow accumulates on the ground. The model factors in temperatures within the clouds as well as the atmospheric conditions that the flakes encounter as they fall to the ground.

thanks for your information on the powder. i'm on the coast and after going through ivan and katrina hurricanes i'd thought there wasn't anything else here to experience then we had a 3.5 earthquake. i freaked. so now i have opened my mind to anything happening here. who knows we could have fresh powder anyday? What happened to the click through link? The only way off of Frankensite it to type in the url. Also, I have designated the subdomain "classic" in my link, but logging in takes me to the new site anyway. Member Since: November 2, 2002 Posts: 0 Comments: 0

When you are back to your carrier's home site, simply delete their url in the address bar, type in classic.wunderground.com, and hit enter. You will now be at the "old" wunderground site called "classic". Simply save that in your "Favorites" section and WaLa, when you want the old, there it is, when you want the new, thats the other one. There seems to be some problem for some trying to get to "classic" from "new". This should eliminate that problem. It works for me anyway. :) Hope this helps you. It's Opening Day!.!........ And on that note, you guys might want to include the weather info for at least some of the home sites for the daily games in your sports news box.
