A Very Dry May for Michigan 2012 |

May 2012 has been very dry for most of Michigan. There are two forest fires in our upper peninsula, one in the Seney wildlife refuge, and the other near Newberry, MI. At this time, the latter fire has already burned 23,000 acres and is only about 50% contained as of this morning. The Seney fire, I believe, is almost totally under control. The above photo shows the Two Hearted River area, home of the Rainbow Lodge and a state forest campground. Both have been totally destroyed in the fire as well as numerous homes and cabins. Tahquamenon Falls State Park has been closed since the fire began last week. What makes this fire so tragic is that it is in a very secluded area of northern Michigan with very few roads for fire fighters to access. Some of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the state have been lost.
My area has received regular rainfall so we haven't had any problems, but even northern lower Michigan has been under a fire danger warning most of the month.
At this time, we are going through a cool spell with frost advisories in effect for northern sections of the state. But we're only looking at lows in the 40s tonight for our area.
Here is the forecast: Tonight...Partly cloudy. Lows 39 to 43. Northwest winds 5 to 15 mph...Becoming light north after midnight.
Thursday...Partly cloudy in the morning...Then mostly cloudy with a chance of rain in the afternoon. Highs 59 to 63. Northeast winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.
Thursday Night...Rain. Lows 44 to 48. East winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 90 percent.
Friday...Breezy...Rain. Highs 54 to 58. North winds 15 to 25 mph...With gusts to 30 mph. Chance of rain 80 percent.
Friday Night...Cloudy with a chance of rain. Lows 44 to 48. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.
