It has been an exciting day. We've managed to set up three towers for tomorrow's burn. The first 10 meter tower will obtain measurements of particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), turbulence from two anemometers (sonic and propeller), as well as six thermocouples that will obtain temperature at every two meters up the tower. The second 10 meter tower and the 3 meter tower do not have the CO2, CO, nor PM 2.5 data. Also, the 3 meter tower will have different instrumentation for PM 2.5 and black carbon.
Winds are forecasted out of the north to northeast on Tuesday, as a stationary front hovers over the region. Therefore, we set up the towers downwind of the ignition line, to the southeast. Also downwind, we will launch a weather balloon in hopes that it will go through the smoke plume as it rises from the surface. I've attached some pictures of Scott Strenfel and myself, busy graduate students hard at work! The gnats and humidity got the best of us...
Scott installing thermocouples every 2 meters on the tower.
Scott, Jason (Park research employee), and I installing the data logger.
Everyone pitching in to lift the tower.
Scott and I forecasting for Tuesday's wind speed and direction.
