OK, I've had my say - that these were density waves caused by two air masses of different temperatures moving with different relative velocities. I can also say this was really weird, it looked like something was "wrong" with the sky!

I am guessing you mean this photo: Where you made this comment: These "wrinkles" were not clouds. I believe they were due to turbulence at the boundary between two air masses of very different temperature and relative velocity. Note there are several sets throughout the photo. I have never seen anything like this - comments welcome - see my blog. Right? ;) I thought it looked odd too. . .have only seen something like that WITHIN clouds, caused mainly by temp changes combined with wind. . .so this would be a relatively new phenomenon for me - as an amateur at best. Oops, forgot the photo. Feather, yes you are right, probably the same event that causes the clouds to form waves but in this case the dew point is too low for condensation to occur in the low pressure (rarefaction?) regions. Therefore the phenomenon shows up as diffraction because the two layers have different densities (like "heat rising" from hot pavement). But, like you, I have never seen this before! It was eerie. I believe this is what you feel when flying in what you might think to be smooth conditions and suddenly, the seat belt light goes on and......... I personally believe that this is vapor of some sort and that it is showing up due to the light being at an optimal place.
