I think winter is finally here after an abnormally warm and dry fall/early winter. I have been putting off attaching the snow blower to the lawn tractor but now I am moving ahead full speed. The main drive belt had cracked so I replaced both belts. Now to attach it to the tractor and put chains on the tires. Then get the sailboat in the garage as it has been in the driveway all fall (covered but still too exposed to the elements for my taste). Outside the cold wind howls, inside, the dogs snore. Where would I rather be?

I had to replace the lithium battery early last October because the instrument no longer transmitted at night (involves the need to be height-insensitive at the peak of a very high, very steep roof, with no wind or rain or snow). So this means a lifetime of 10 months, something I can live with. Apparently the supercap is leaking but not at the rate that I've heard from some unhappy folks. I just hope it lasts through the winter because there is no way I am going up ...

My Davis is still running two weeks later. The current leak must not be that bad but still... you have to wonder why the current would stop exactly when the sun set. Suggests the capacitor is bad but not necessarily leaking electrons. Hopefully this battery will last until the snow melts for good so I can climb up and install the new capacitor I bought. Um, I will do that on the ground. The station is 5' above the roof peak so I'll have to pull the pole out of the t...

Last week I suddenly started losing outdoor weather data after sunset, only to have it return at sunrise (provided it wasn't cloudy). My research on the web strongly suggests that the super capacitor ("super cap") has failed and is leaking power, thus draining the battery. If you are not aware of how the wireless solar-powered system works, here is a quick primer: the power generated by the solar panel is stored in a high-capacity capacitor - NOT in the battery. The...

OK, I've had my say - that these were density waves caused by two air masses of different temperatures moving with different relative velocities. I can also say this was really weird, it looked like something was "wrong" with the sky!Tim
