I walk turtles across the road if I come across one stuck on the yellow line. there's not a lot of traffic around here but you still have to be careful. you put the turtle on the shoulder it was heading for. this morning's chicken turtle, an aquatic turtle, was on the yellow line and when I went to pick him (he was a male) up I noticed he was bleeding and his shell was cracked all in the back so that you could see his innards. but he was alive and trying to walk away. at the lab I put him in a box and wrapped damp paper towels over his shell so his insides wouldn't dry out.
dr. dawn miller took him in. she healed a red-tailed hawk that I brought her a few years ago. I hope he makes it. his shell has to knit together again. she said she would make a mold and attach it with screws so the pieces (3 or 4) would rejoin. I left him in good hands.

snakes, too, but definitely turtles. my heart just cringes seeing a turtle hesitantly trying to get across the road..
