Sunshine today, and a welcome sight it was, with wind but not enough to keep the windows closed. I put Maggie in the back yard and headed out to the nearby Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge to lead a spring & summer birds field trip. The boardwalk, or Sandpiper Trail as it is formally known, is lined with willows and twinberry, blackberry vines covered with flowers, and the marsh wrens were out in good numbers, as were the song sparrows. We heard warblers but only managed to see one yellow warbler, saw several cedar waxwings, black-capped chickadees with begging fledglings following them from limb to limb, and tons of cliff swallows still building nests under the roofline of the airplane hangers.
We had great blue herons, Canada Geese, savannah sparrows, brown-headed cowbirds, gulls of mixed breeds, a crow or two, robins, a few flickers and the resident osprey. We were thrilled to be out in just shirtsleeves, because the afternoon wind usually comes up and gets pretty cool. In short, it was a great day to be outdoors.
Meanwhile, I left screened windows open for Dutchie and Fluff, who had to stay indoors for the extent of time I was gone. So after I fed them, I let Dutchie out and stood and watched as she left the yard, crossed the street to the empty lot, and crouched down intently focused on something I couldn't see. I walked out to see what it was...it was the big male cottontail. I warned her he could kick her butt, then left her alone to watch the bunny. He is well aware of the cats in the neighborhood but I don't think he is the least bit worried about them. Nevertheless, he stays very still; no sense tempting fate.
It wasn't more than 10 minutes later I checked again, and she was walking back home and came back inside.

Nothing remarkable going on regarding the visiting cats; that's the good news. They continue to settle into life at a slow pace now that the craziness of the shorebird festival is over. I have bowed out of the library board, cut back my Master Gardener duties to those involving North Beach activities only, and am learning to say "No" to any further volunteer activities. This is all in hopes of spending more time with my furry family, going out on birding trips, and ...

I have added two more photos of the newest additions to the house...and my heart. I can tell you one thing about these two cats, they are just about as affectionate as cats can be. I have a really comfortable recliner in which I watch the news every evening. As soon as I sit down in it and push it into the reclining mode, Dutchie jumps into my lap and then stretches her length along my right side, all the way up to my shoulder, inviting me to pet her, accompanied by...

A bit more on their behaviors; Joe had said Fluff was shy, but she was the first to approach me and offer me her trust maybe because she has been in strange situations before. She likes to sit and watch my cats and dog from the safety of the doorway of "their" room, tail switching back and forth.
She also hisses at Maggie, although not as ferociously as before. Maggie actually got to within a foot of Fluff last night, so the hissing isn't serious any more...

Responding to JoeAlaska's plea for cat caretakers for a while I knew I could do this as well if not better than most, as I have done it before. They joined my own two cats and a big yellow lab on April 2nd, and I have promised to show photos and keep their many fans up to date with their life in my home.
