The last entry was getting old, so I thought I'd just clean house and get rid of it.

I had a few ideas for a new entry but can't seem to find enough information online to write something up.

I guess this will be just another chit hat blog. Maybe a few word games. Chat about what you've been watching on TV, movies you've seen or books you're reading.

I've been watching the Hell on Wheels Marathon today, which precedes the season premier at 9:00 tonight.

The itinerant town that followed the construction of the Intercontinental Railway from the East really was called Hell on Wheels. Colm Meaney portrays Thomas Clark "Doc" Durant, who really was involved in the endeavour. Some of his real life deals were integrated into the show. He was a bit of a con man, from what I've read. Always scheming and not all that honest.

I remember I found some photos online of the real Hell on Wheels during last season. Can't seem to locate them now. It was a rowdy, lawless place, full of saloons, brothels, railway workers, con men, hangers on and who knows who else.

could not believe I was actually first at something! Max watches the Hell On Wheels. I watch it a little bit but mainly just listen while I'm doing something else. There are very few shows I actually watch. There has been a kitty hanging around our place for about a week. I had started feeding it thinking it was a stray now I'm thinking it must be just new to the neighborhood and learning to make the rounds. This morning I went out to feed it & it had brought along 2 more friends! I will NOT become the "cat" lady of the neighborhood. So this diner has closed its doors.............. Rambling is good. We've been watching the Olympics pretty much. Tonight are the closing ceremonies. I've been reading lots. Some books I recently finished..... The Giant Slayer - it's one of our CYRM books for upper grade. I've now read all 3 and this was my favorite. Interesting story. The Girl Who Fell From the Sky - recommended to me a while ago - another interesting story. Home to Harmony and Shade of Harmony - reminded me a bit of the Mitford series, yet different. Just a very pleasant read. I think I've already mentioned to you the others I have read. My book club is reading The Handmaid's Tale next. I am starting it tonight. My local library had the large print edition, which will make for easy night time reading :) Believe it or not it's been pretty hot around here. I've either been swimming or boogie boarding in the ocean every day. It's just plain too hot but I think we begin a slight cool down beginning tomorrow....can't wait! Hi, Janet. Yes, you got first. I haven't had a first in quite a while. Oh, no, you don't want to be the crazy cat lady at the end of the street. We get lots of strays around our house. There's fast food places, with their dumpsters, nearby. I feel bad for them; it breaks my heart. But I will not let myself break down and feed them. You see what happens, when I do! Gus is now King of the House. I don't have room inside, nor the purse, to support a whole clowder of cats. One of our feline visitors does live in the neighborhood; it was too well fed looking and I finally spotted a collar. Hi, Sandi. I know you'll enjoy the company but what is Blue going to think about a miniature human in the house? I wouldn't see Gus. He wanted out a week or two ago and the neighbor from across the street was out there talking with Hubby. Gus took one look out the door, did an immediate about face and scuttled off to hide under the bed in the spare room. So many of those collective nouns are extremely appropriate to the subject, aren't they? The crows' noun is good. The noun for rhinos is another one I like. Let's see, I have been watching the last episodes of The Closer, have not seen the series ender episode. I taped it and will watch soon. I also taped the sequel show, hopefully it will be good as well. I am also following Falling Sky, I am an alien shows fan! Hi, Aubie. The house cleaning was blog cleaning. My house needs a good going over, too. Pros, my manager loaned me the Stieg Larsson books. Both of us wanted to read more about Lisbeth Salander but, sadly, Larsson is no longer with us. The two of us felt that there would have been more stories to come in the series. I've wanted to watch Falling Skies but didn't catch the first season. I was hoping they'd rerun it, like AMC did with Walking Dead and Hell On Wheels, so I could see it from the beginning. Hi, ho, everyone. It's me. In disguise again. GG, that poor budgie isn't going to last long outside, I'm afraid. You really ought to keep trying to coax him into a cage, with treats or a mirror inside. They don't do well out there, alone. In Oz, they live in flocks. Janet, keep your fingers crossed for my drive back. They're still forecasting possible afternoon showers and T-storms. Sandi, you've had a good bit of company lately, haven't you? It's good that Blue is a mellow kitty. Hi, Ylee! Safe so far. I left home about quarter of 9:00 and got to The Oaks in O'burg about 10:30. I didn't have much trouble finding it. I did have to stop one time and ask directions. I was supposed to turn left on Weatherford Rd but when I got to where it was supposed to be, the street sign had another name. Just what it was, I don't remember now. There was a gas station there, so I went inside and asked. It was the right road but the girls had no explanation as to why the sign had a different name. On the other end, where it came out on Hwy 21, the sign was correct. As it turned out, the road came out almost opposite the main drive of The Oaks. I had a good visit with my uncle. He looks good; not at all as bad as he was described to me last week. His son came in while I was their and the two of us visited whilst Uncle "D" went to a therapy session. I stayed to have lunch with my uncle; my cousin left before lunch, as he had some things to take care of. I left The Oaks about 2:00, drove to Walmart, got gas and then hit the road to Greenwood. I arrived a bit later than I was hoping; about quarter of 5:00. Hubby had already called to see if I'd arrived. He was a bit freaked to hear that I wsn't there yet, though I'd told him it could be anytime between 4:00 and 5:00, depending on when I left O'burg. Dad had promised him to call when I did get there, which he then did. Smom had left spaghetti for supper. I headed to bed about 9:30 and was going to work a crossword before going to sleep. I woke up sometime later, crossword book open, lamp on. (Where my pen went, I have no idea. I've searched that bedroom 3 times!) I cut the light and went back to sleep. I didn't wake up until almost 8:00 this morning. Dad and I spent some time last night and most of the day catching up on family news and just talking. This afternoon we watched a couple of shows on the Nat'l Geographic channel about Vikings. (My cable co. does not offer that channel, so it was a treat.) My aunt and uncle here in Greenwood invited us over for supper tonight. Fresh veggies from their garden, pot roast and a lovely strawberry pie. Dad went to bed about 8:00 I've emptied the dishwasher, got the coffee maker ready for the a.m. pot, got my jammies on. I figured I'd better post in. I also wanted to put up a fresh entry for Dad. He has dialup and I don't like to let too many comments build up in his blog. It gets slow to load. Tomorrow morning after breakfast I'm going back over to my aunt/uncle's house for a little more visiting but will be back at Dad's for lunch. Tomorrow afternoon, a friend of Dad's is stopping by. We don't have any plans for Sat morning. I plan to head back home after lunch, arriving home between 5:00 and 6:00. Smom went to visit a friend in Atlanta while I am here. I'm not sure when she's coming back. She could pop up tomorrow, Sat morning or even sometime Sat afternoon.. Smom does know I'm leaving Sat afternoon. It's quite possible she may call tomorrow to let us know what time she expects to get back. I think it's time I close up shop here. See if I can get one crossword done without noddding off. Happy Saturday, Pros, Sandi, Janet and Shore! Pros, that is a PURPLE morning glory. Sandi, Dad really has enjoyed our visit. Janet, I think I'll be OK coming home. They're calling for scattered showers/T-storms but maybe I can slip through without any trouble. Shore, that's a good one: a consternation of commuters. Applies more to the daily work commute than it will to my drive home. I don't tend to have much trouble with traffic except in O'burg. The Sat traffic is lighter than the weekday traffic on the secondary roads going home. It's really not all that heavy during the week. I do see more logging trucks on the weekedays between O'burg and Saluda. Smom is supposed to have left Hot 'Lanta just after breakfast this a.m., so she should arrive shortly before lunch. I'll probably leave around 1:30. I have everything in the truck except for some items in the icebox, which I'll load into my cooler just before I leave. I load up right after breakfast; I hate to leave it until the last minute. I'll wind up running around like a chicken with my head chopped off and I'm bound to forget something. Better to do it early and have time to check after myself. I'll probably get home between 5:30 and 6:30. I'll see about checking in for a few minutes but I'm sure I'll be tired and will be heading to bed early. Got things to do tomorrow, then back to work Monday. Hi, OGal, Shore and Janet. Thanks for the well wishes for the safe travels. It was uneventful but I was tired when I got home. I left a few minutes earlier than planned, about 1:15. About 12:30, Dad and I noticed that it was getting very overcast, so I checked the radar. There was a small storm cell headed towards Greenwood and a severe T-storm warning posted. I was kind of hanging around, hoping that Smom would arrive before I left but Dad thought it might be a better idea for me to scoot out and try to stay ahead of the rain. I had put all my stuff in the truck after breakfast, except for a few things I was carrying back in my cooler. Some grapes I'd picked at my aunt/uncle's house Fri a.m., some banana peppers, bell peppers from his garden. I filled a gallon zip lock bag of ice, got those in the cooler and in the truck. I pulled out about 1:15. I had some split-splats on the windshield off and on from Greenwood to Batesburg-Leesville but no real rain. Got home about quarter of 6:00. I don't know who was happier to see me, Hubby or Gus. I thought about posting in last night but I was just too tired to bother. I had Hubby call Dad shortly after I got home, to let him know I'd made it back safely. Smom had gotten there not too long after I left, so Dad wasn't alone for long. I got something to eat, watched a little TV and headed to bed early. Am washing clothes, in hopes of beating that front headed our way. I don't think I'm going to finish up, though. I'll probably have some things hanging inside but I'll get it all done. The heaviest things went out on the line in the first two loads, so they'll be close to dry by now. Have no idea what to do for dinner. We do eat late on Sunday, rather than midday. I'll probably have to make a run to the grocer, as the cupboard is a bit bare. Morning to You:) Glad the trip home was uneventful, and leaving before the rains came meant you missed the worse of it. Like you, my visitors last week decided to leave early to try to miss the heaviest of the rain belt that was crossing from the west to the east. I guided her across MK to the road she needed to head home, (MK is a big confusing city if you are not a local), with clouds building all the time, but other than a few showers, she made it home in three hours before the heavy rain hit the east. Back in my house the heavens opened about five minutes after I made it back home!! Hope you desk is not too full when you get there this morning! AUGH!!!!! How in heaven's name does so much work accumulate in so short a time? My email in box is overflowing. I'm glad my work is all in the computer because, if it wasn't, I wouldn't be able to even see my desk. I've told my supervisor that I'll do my best but it probably won't be current until the end of the week. I hope I'm not being too optimistic! Hi, Sandi. So, your guest was doing the same thing I was: hightailing it out of town with a rainstorm nipping at her heels. I'm glad that, like me, the strategy worked! I see the tropics are HOPPING! There's four things out there to watch. Gordon won't be an issue for us but he might be for Portugal. Helene is trying to make a comeback. There are two invests swirling along the ITCZ and who knows what else is coming behind them. If this keeps up, I foresee some late nights on the computer, watching model runs and satellite loops. Hi, ho, Happy Tuesday. Amazingly, I managed to make a BIG dent in the backlog on my desk by the time I clocked out. Good thing, too. We've our monthly staff meeting tomorrow and that takes a good two hours out of my workday. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I'll be current in another day or two. I see TD 9 has formed. I thought as much, this morning, when I was watching TWC. What I don't like is the curvature that has developed in the Cone of Doom. It could possibly come up the East Coast. Anudder busy day. I see Isaac is looking more and more like he's going to run up the west coast of FL into the GOM. I'll keep my fingers crossed that he doesn't intensify. TD 10 looks like it may not even make landfall. I liked the Word of the Day this morning: dundrearies\dun-DREER-eez\ noun plural : long flowing sideburns In the United States, Our American Cousin by Tom Taylor is often best remembered as the play Abraham Lincoln was watching at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Word lovers may also recall that the show gave us "dundrearies," a name for the long, bushy sideburns (called "Piccadilly weepers" in England). The term for that particular men's hair fashion, which was popular between 1840 and 1870, comes from the name of Lord Dundreary, a character in the play who sported those elegant whiskers. Ah, no worries, sandi! I think we all find ourselves easily distracted these days. I know I am! Yes, Isaac is a big fella. Doc was commenting on his size over at his place today and giving his perspective of how he thinks this will play out. FL may be in for a rough time. We've got a tornado warning up down around Edisto Beach. They spotted a waterspout off Edisto Beach State Park about an hour ago. If waterspouts move onshore, they become tornados. It does look rather black on Channel 5's sky cams. Overcast here at the house but it doesn't look too bad. No rain yet but I imagine we'll get some. Hubby cut the grass this afternoon. It looks good. Morning, Bug! What a beautiful morning you've got. If you've got to hang laundry, it looks like this will be a good one for it. What are they saying about your effects from Isaac? Rain, I imagine, depending on the recurve. It looks like we're completely out of the picture, and probably even Louisiana. For the rest, just wait and see. YogiNav popped up on the blogs yesterday with his post I think of as "To evacuate or not to evacuate? That is the question". As I remember he's in Gulf Shores, just west of Pensacola. There are a bunch of folks who are in the path of this thing. I do hope it doesn't intensify. Now, I have to go back and ponder that list of collectives. Good morning. All eyes are on Isaac today. Even though we're not expected to receive any impact, other than rain, I'm still watching, myself. Since joining up on WU, it's become increasingly hard to watch these storms make landfall. Oh, I was always horrified at the news reports and saddened at the destruction of property and disruption of people's lives but I didn't KNOW anyone in the affected areas. It wasn't personal. Now, it is. I've made too many friends here on WU that live around the GOM and the Eastern Seaboard. I take heart, though, in knowing that they know how to prepare and/or evacuate. Still, I worry. No one who has gone through a severe storm can ever not worry about their friends in a storm's path. It's a sunny day here for a change. I'm taking advantage by getting the week's wash started early. I wasn't able to get it all done last Sunday, due to rain. If I'd washed during the week, it would have had to be hung inside. I just didn't bother. I've a run to Walmart on the schedule later this afternoon. Got a prescription to fill and a few things on my running "Walmart" list to pick up. I'm also getting gas before the price shoots up any more. If it hasn't, already. I see on the news this a.m. that BP has closed it's Thunder Horse rig. Shell and others are evacuating many of their rigs, as well. Closed rigs mean higher gas prices. Better move; got another load ready to peg out. Good morning. I slept in a bit late, then read the paper and started checking the latest on Isaac. It looks like they've shifted the tracks a little bit west this a.m. From what I see on Gams' blog, everyone is getting ready. Shore! I didn't realize you had sneaked in about the same time I was posting yesterday. There's an Isaac related Hazardous Weather Statement up for us: MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY. SEVERE WEATHER...ISOLATED TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH TUESDAY AS TROPICAL CYCLONE ISAAC PASSES BY TO THE SOUTHWEST. FLOODING...HEAVY RAINFALL WILL BE POSSIBLE AT TIMES THROUGH MID WEEK AS TROPICAL CYCLONE ISAAC PASSES SOUTHWEST OF THE AREA. THIS COULD LEAD TO LOCALIZED FLOODING...ESPECIALLY OF LOW-LYING AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS AS WELL AS AROUND THE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE ALONG THE COAST. COASTAL HAZARDS...THE RIP CURRENT RISK WILL REMAIN ELEVATED THROUGH AT LEAST THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK. ALSO...ELEVATED TIDES DUE IN PART TO THE UPCOMING FULL MOON COULD PRODUCE SHALLOW SALT WATER FLOODING AROUND THE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE THROUGH AT LEAST MID WEEK. It looks like we're expected to get rain pretty much all next week. Ylee, I was able to get gas at Murphy's/Walmart for 3.45 gallon for regular. (Keep in mind I always round up my gas price. I don't bother with that .9 business. 3.44.9 is 3.45 any way you look at it!) Sandi, yes, I was able to get all my wash done and it was an absolutely beautiful day to do wash. Unseasonably cool and dry. Gorgeous blue sky, a light breeze. I had everything dried and back in, in no time. Got what I needed at Walmart and was home by 5:30. Hubby had gone out for a while. I fixed myself a gin and tonic with a lemon twist and put my feet up for a bit. Got a bite for supper when Hubby got home and we watched TV for a bit. Nothing much on the agenda today. A little misc. picking up. I've some chicken for our Sunday supper. I think I'll pan sear it and smother it in gravy. Fix a pot of rice. I've a bag of frozen butter beans in the freezer. Patti, make sure OB is sealed up in a zip lock. She doesn't handle storms very well. Much like myself. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone in Isaac's path. Right now, there's still too much divergence in the models to tell where landfall will be. It makes you feel like one of those plastic ducks in the shooting galleries at the fair, doesn't it?
