Tonight will be overcast with a low of -7C(19F). ------------------------------------------------- --- Yesterday I made a batch of chocolate-cherry oatmeal cookies. They are a hit and 1/2 of the first container I left out are gone. I got Abby out for her romp on the bunny trails ,where she managed to scare up a bunny, and raked up leave that were covering my tulip bed. I hope with the warm weather we've had they don't get confused and pop up before we get a hard frost. I think today I'll get back to the settler project and make leather harness for the horses. The other day I found I could make tiny buckles from paper clips. Those things sure come in handy. I also experimented and found I could use straight pins for nails for the heirloom clock. I guess I keep doing the tiny stuff as a challenge to my vision problems. View (7) Comments For This Post
Today will be sunny with a high of -4C(24F). Tonight will bring increasing cloudiness after midnight and am overnight low of -10C(14F). ------------------------------------------------- --- Yesterday I cleared the driveway of snow. The snow had a different texture than normal. It wasn't sticky enough to be snowman type snow but it was a bit tacky. Must have been the near thawing temps. I usually make a path for the mailman across my front lawn for him to deliver bills and save him a few steps, I have to quit that and maybe he'll quit with the bills. When i got across my lawn to the neighbors driveway I continued and did that too. It only took about 10 minutes and saved his back. The snow blower is great as it leaves no piles along side the driveway. After moving the snow I heeded the Queen's warning not to overdo it and never took Abbey out for her walk but she did get a car ride when the daughter took me to city-hall to get the property tax bill for my income tax. I think I shredded the original while going through my stack of paid bills. It will be back to cookie baking today and get started on the miniature clock. I think if I make it smaller that the original I'll be able to use it with the settlers project and give them a family heirloom.:) Must be time to go, I hear the Queen rising. Today will be mainly sunny with a high of -10C(14F). Tonight will remain clear as the temp drops to a normal of -19C(-2F). ------------------------------------------------- - Yesterday I made a small batch of brownies. I guess today I'll have to make cookies again as the last batch has disappeared as have the brownies. Today I'm going to change the cookie recipe and make chocolate oatmeal cookies with small pieces of dried cherry. It will be a miniature black forest cake. :)but first I have to move snow. We never had much snow but with the wind it seems to collect n the driveway beside my house. For Alley, yep that was Kramer in yesterdays blog. Since his 3 month excursion a few years back he's learned where to fill his tummy and never strays far from home but has become an outside cat and likes to go outdoors and look around. it's funny that he chooses to go out in the evening and we usually don't see him until morning when I let Abbey out for her morning chore. It's like a changing of shifts where Kramer comes in and Abey goes out. For Shore I'll even post the recipe today for my butterscotch oatmeal cookies. Mix flour with baking soda. Combine butter, sugars and pudding in large bowl. Beat until smooth. Beat in eggs. Gradually add flour mix. Then stir in oats. (Batter will be stiff.) Drop by rounded teaspoons on ungreased sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. I used butterscotch pudding. MMMM I had to leave out the raisins, none on hand. My next batch will be with chocolate pudding mix and I'll substitute the raisin's with dried cherry chunks. I also used a tablespoon of dough, rolled onto balls and flattened between the palms. I thought a teaspoon would be too tiny but still ended up with 3 dozen cookies which are all gone.I also substituted and olive oil based margarine for the butter. I was starting to think people were not interested in my dsy to day ativities. Besides that it's 5:30am and I don't want to wake anyone by turning on the TV so I decided to open the doors of the Northern Edge again. it must be the female hormones the Queen secretly gives me while i'm sleeping that makes me change my mind. :) It also gets me to do dishes, bake cakes and cookies and prepare meals for her. Darn that woman and her devious ways.
Yesterday I helped the grandson with his carving of a car. The car is for a competion at a boys club he attends at the churchhis family attends. They supplied a piece of wood and were given the choice of what to do with it. I guess the club leaders had never done ant wood carving. They gave him a piece of maple, probably cut from and old bed headboard. That wood is really hard to work with as it's so hard. His chunk was 2x3 aand about 9 inches long. I cheated and brought out the jig saw to cut out the basic shape of the car. I showed him how to use scrap wood to buffer the working piece so that it could be held with a vice and not mark the working piece. I then showed him how to cut out the basic shape with the jig saw following the shape he he had drawn on the wood. We then used files starting with a rasp and down to a fine file to trim up the rough cut and smooth it. He's now going to cut out the wheel wells with a dremal tool. The scale is sure a lot bigger than I've been playing with. When we were done we both sat down and had a glass of milk and some of my cookies. The kid ate a whole container of my cookies. lol I'll bet he didn't eat much supper. :) Strange how a grandpa would let the boy eat the whole container while a mom woudn't. When mom came to pick him up I gave her a cookie and she agreeed they were good so I gave her my recipe. I think it's pretty funny, a dad giving his daughter a recipe for cookies. I came up with a new project yesterday. I have a miniture grandfather clock, 10 inches high but made of plastic. The thing is spring driven and accually keeps time and is regulated with a pendulum but doesn't have chimes. :(. My project is to make a wooden case for it from a piece of 1/8th inch thich oak plywood I have in the hoard. That should keep me off the steets for a while. View (4) Comments For This Post

I think not having a drivers licence ddoes have somw advantages as I really wasn't involved in the rush. I was mixing the ingrediants and wondered why it was so thick. I then realized that i had forgotten to add 2 eggs. My egg supply was in 2 boxes with 1 in 1 box and a full carton. I added the 1 egg and forgot to add the other 2 called for. :) I wonder how the cake would have turned out if I hadn't of caught my error. :) After I had finished the cake I had a 2 hour nap. Poor Abbey never got out on the trails yesterday. I also added to the pioneer project by making a leather holder for the winchester. Is that leather ever hard to work with in such small pieces. I think I'll leave the tiny stuff for a day or 2 and maybe put a quartz movement in an old clock case I bought at a garage sale in the Quepelle Valley on a trip to visit my daughter while she was going to univercity in Regina, gosh that was a long time ago. On the medical part of my life I should phone my doctor and tell him it's day 3 pn the garbage cycle and the trash goes on the curb tonight for pickup tomorrow morning.I guess I'm still in the real world even if I don't know the day of the week most days. Tonight wil remain mainly cloudy with an overnight low of -11C(12F). ------------------------------------------------- Yesterday I took Abbey on a shopping trip along the downton route. The Queen needed a few things at the store and, not wanting to go out, sent me and Abbey. It sure wasn't Abbey's idea of a good time being ties to a parkink meter outside the store. I could hear her whining from inside the store. The next time I have to I go shopping I'll leave the poor pupp pupy at home. She sure isn't used to being tied. On the way home we met a gentleman and his small og. He must have been new to dogs. When Abbey and me meet another dog I like to let them have a short visit and introduce themselves and ask the owner if their dog is friendly. If the answer is positive I take Abbey over for a sniff. When i did this the gentleman said he didn't know. so I took a chance and brought Abbey over. They 2 dogs had their introductry sniff and greeted each other. I told the fellow that was a dogs way of shaking hands. He replied is that ever neat and thanked me when we left. He should be watching the Dog Whisper and learn that dogs need to be solialized. I came up with a new landscape idea for the settler project. While looking for something in the hoard i came across a suspended cieling ligh panel. The 2foot by 4 foot panel will make a nice snowy terain, which will even have sparkly places from the frost. with some white quilting fill I have. I can use the fill for drifts. Those poor settlers will have to brave a prairie winter until I can get to the railway club for grass. Maybe they'll be able to tell my why my ancestors stayed here after experiencing their first winter. :) When I find the grass subsitute I'll be able to give them a change of seasons as well a reason for me to dust off the thing. The Queen is going to shoot me with the winchester for tsaking up a space almost as big as a desktop.Soon I'll have to look for a bigger home just for my toys. View (3) Comments For This Post

I'll have to I'll have to think about carving a small horse drawn plow to break the prairie sod. That will be a challenge! If I can't get any ideas for grass for the dioramam I may change the setting to a desert. That should be easier to replicate with sand glued to plywood along with a few small stones and a cotton ball shredded and painted. I think I'm getting carried away on the project but at least the young ladies are safe and don't have to worry about an old gezzer chasing them down the street. View (4) Comments For This Post

Tonight will bring a few clouds and an overnight low of -10C(14F). ----------------------------------------------- Yesterday after the Queen was off to work and my walk along the bunny trails was over i did some more work on the pioneer project. I carved out n axe and cut the the place to store the trunk that my settlers have. I sure made a mess while cutting the shelf for the side of the wagon. I had left my prestained urathane on the floor with the lid off and knocked it over. It's a good thing I was working in my hoard area and only left s few stains on the freezer. I think I could have gotten all the mess cleaned up with a dolvent but didn't want to use that close to the furnace. I remember working with a fellow who was cleaning car parts in his basement with gasoline and when the furnace came on there was a small explosion ans he almost burnt the house down. The funny thing about his error in judgement was hat he sold a snowblower to one of the firemen. HE was a funny guy. He once said that when he went to the land fill he usally came home with more than he went with. he snowblower that he sold had come from the dump and and had been repaired. :) The men working at the landfills must come home with all kinds of treasures. A packrat like me would have the available storage area filled in no time. Darn this retirement. I'm missing another long weekend.Monday is Loui Riel Day in manitoba. I sliced a couple of pieces from a 2x4, stained them and today I'll ue the to hold the trunk I made the other dat on the side of the wagon. I also washed the cabvas top for the wagon whuch was covered in concrete dust from the bathroom project. Yoday I think I'l see if I can make a sleeve to attach the winchester to the wagon. I may even get started on the windmill project to light a small 12 volt light so that I can gauge wind speed bt the amount of light it produces. I got Abbey out on the bunny trails but no bunnies. Poor Abbey. :) for sure with the warm temps forecast I'll have to see if she can catch me fresh meat for supper. :) When my uncle, the one whose covered wagon I now own, used to go bunny hunting. They are god eating but the Queen refused to cook them after I brought home one skinned and ready to cook and told her that i had got a dog. I'm late today. This lazy old geezer stayed in bed until 7;30 and by then the Queen was ready for the morning coffee and chat which was followed bt a shopping trip themy walk with Abbey. The hearing aid is till on the missing list I guess it's goner. :( But on the good side I have another reason to tell the Queen I didn't hear her when assignes extra duties to Dorthy Domestic. Yesterday I lost a hesring aid. I remember checking them in the morning but in the evning I was goung out for coffee and notived 1 was missing. That tiny thing could be anywhere in the house of along the road on my 2.5 mile walk with Abbey along the gopher trails. I'll have to get out along our route early today before the snow starts. But I don't think theirs much chance of finding the tiny thing. The things are like glasses once you get used to having them in your ear you never notice them. My hearing deficency is mostly at the upper end of the sound range. I guess at over $3500 an ear I'll have another excuse not to listen to the Queen for atleast another 4 years until my next pair, supplied by workman's Compensation, is due. The only time she gets more than a couple of hundred feet from me on our treks is when she find a bunny but all it takes is 1 whistle and she breaks off the chase and comes back to me. I've never had such a loyal dog. I think today I'll start a tiny axe for the settlers to cut trees for their proposed log cabin and coral. A good thing has come of my playing with the dremal. My grandson has taken interest in wood carving and is working on a car made from a 2x4. It will be good for his imagination and keep him from sitting in front of the television or playing video games. yesterday. Tonight will remain clear with an overnight low of -14C(6F). ------------------------------------------------ I finally finished the Winchester. My 4 inch long Winchester.  LOL the picture's bigger than the rifle. After nearly a week working on the rifle for the settlers to have fresh meat and 3 attempts that were discarded I'm finally happy with the way it looks. I showed the Queen my handiwork and told her I was going to take it to my doctor and tell him to write the letter that would get my driver's licence back. She said he'd never believe I did it. My vision problem is peripheral where I can't see my left hand until it's directly in front of me. The carving of the little gun was all done by holding the thing on my right side and whittling away with the dermal. I think my next project will be a small sledge hammer made from a piece of aluminum rod have in the hoard and after that a tiny pick to go with the spade I've already made. I will not let this visual thing beat me and will continue to challenge it. Yesterday I got Abbey out for a walk on the gopher trails but again she found nothing to chase. On our way home we met a lady walking her Jack Russel Terrier and stop for a chat and a and sniff for the dogs. She said Abbey must really enjoy her walks and that she sees us nearly every day. I told her our route ,long the gopher trails, and said that I unleash Abbey and let her run free for about a mile and a half. She asked if she came back when called as her little dog would be gone. On that note I had to show off by favorite trick with Abbey where I take her leash off, hold open a loop in the choker and tell her to put her head in which she does. The lady said "What a smart dog". Whoever left Abbey in the pound to be euthanized sure lost a great dog! Gosh I brag about Abbey alot. Tonight will remain clear with an overnight low of -14C(6F). ------------------------------------------------- --- I took Abbey out for a short walk yesterday. goodness the wind was cool. I also worked on the Winchester and finished it but I think I'll redo the lever as it looks a bit too big for the 5 inch long rifle. When I'm happy with it I'll go to macro mode on the camera and post a photo here. The next item on my agenda will be the covered wagon I picked up at a garage sale, I wouldn't touch the one I inherited from my uncle. It will remain unfinished as he left it when he passed away. I'm also going to keep my eye open for another horse the proper scale to pull the red river cart, which I'm going to transform into a gun carriage, and cannon. I also have to find a small man to ride with the lady I have for the covered wagon. The silly thing a retired man does to pass the time! Once the rolling stock is complete it will be the log cabin Alley suggested. I may even make a log Coral to keep the tiny pigs I used to have in my office. People used to laugh at my collection of tiny toy animals I used to decorate my office with. I also have to pay a visit to the local model railway club to find out what the use for grass in their railways. It should work fine in my diorama of the settling if the west. I already have small plastic figurines of Tonto and the Lone Ranger to keep the peace. on another note it looks like the prairies are still wild. I saw an ad for an episode of National Geographic on outlaw bikers. It sounds like it was filmed in Winnipeg. What a good tourist attraction that will be for the Manitoba capital city.Come to Winnipeg and watch the Hells Angels shoot the Los Brravos. I even gave Dorthy a day off and never did any baking. The light for the wireless connection comes on but none of the keys work. I'll have to check the connections today. While reassembling it I could see a factory in China, where it was made, assembling all the tiny parts all day. It doesn't sound like a fun job. The clock is ticking again but still running fast. I may have to cheat and lengthen the pendulum rod a bit. I used to take the works apart clean and re-oil them but I don't want it to quit permanently. The Winchester is shaped as good as I can get it and a small shim under the front of the barrel will get it pointing horizontally. I may even bend some paperclips to make a lever and trigger guard. I think I'm going overboard for a rifle that will never be aimed at a bunny or deer. I'll have all afternoon to play with the tiny parts as the Queen is on evening shift and the granddaughter and her 2 little ones won't be home until 3. The youngest daughter sent me a recipe for brownies. I'll have to get the Queen to take me shopping to pick up some ingredients I don't have and add brownies to the bakery menu. I'll have to check my boots and see if the studs I installed are still in place. With today's forecasted strong northerly wind I think we'll stay home today and maybe get back to work on the windchester. Yesterday I disassembled the wireless keyboard and cleand the sticky cola out of it. Today will be a task to see if I can remember where all the tiny pieces go and reassemble it. The thin plastic circuit board has a scorch mark on it all my work may have been in vain. I'll never know if I made a mistake assembling it or if the electronics are fried. it probably would have been easier to buy a new one but it filled part of my day. I also installed a new end on the Queen's block heater but so far this year we've had little use for it. It seems overheating was the main problem. I've always told her to shut the thing off when she wasn't using it but no one listens to an old man. :) Those laptops aren't meant to be run full time and are hard to clean out accumulated dust. Desktops are easy to clean, just pop the cover off and use canned air to blow out the heat sinks and fans. On that note I think it's time I cleaned out my computer as it runs 24/7 to keep the window cam up to date. I also worked on the grandmother clock which had quit working. I must need a cleaning too but I have it running again but the swing of the pendulum is very weak and because of the short swing it runs fast. I chose the downtown route due to biting wind. We still get 2 miles in but she sure misses her bunny hunt. Dorthy Domestic ,for fear of being fired, started her household duties agin while the Queen worked. Besides the cookies she washed the kitchen and living room floors then played technician and recovered all of the Queen's documents. It's a good thing I did the backup before buying her the new computer. I'll have to check the shop today and see if her laptop is repairable. I've had an offer from the yougest daughter to buy it for one of her boys to use at school. I guess it won't be part of the hoard if it will work. After waiting 2 Dorthy to bake a cake she baked one herself. When I told her how I applied the icing the Queen said she's baked cakes longer than me. :) I think I took a weekend off. :) Today I have to put a new end on the cord for the Queen's block heater. When plugging in her car last night I noticed one of the wires was broken. For those in warmer climes a block heater keeps the engine warm by heating the antifreeze in the motor. It's a good thing it's been so warm and haven't needed the extra heat in the morning. I usually plug in the car when the fore casted low is below -18C(0F). I beleive I have an new cord end in the hoard. :) I got Abbey out for a walk along the bunny trails but cut it short due to the strong north wind. I have a section about a 1/2 mile long along a n/s road. The trip south would have been good but the return trip would have been too cold for this guy. I'm turning into a wimp. :) Today while the Queens at work I'll have to transfer the rest of her data onto her hard drive and see if I can get a wireless keyboard the daughter spilled a drink on working again. With the Queen and grandaughter both working I'll have access to the kitchen table witch is brightly lit by the sun. My next project will be to create a wire loom to untangel the mess of wires behind my computer. If it works out well I'll build one for the Queen's new computer. When I set up the Queen's computer I came up with a good idea, I labeled the usb and cord ends. I'll have to do that with mine too.It sure beats following a wire from the device to the outlet when you want to disconnect it. View (6) Comments For This Post

I recovered her geneaolgy data ,all 2245 names, but today I have to recover her documents and pictures. While she was working on the geneaology app she made 1 error and turned her family tree into a tangled bush. :) It's a good thing I set aside the backup drive, I can restore her data back to testerday morning and she'll only loose 1 day's research. That project sure keeps her from chasing young men down the street. If the young men knew what a great companion and caring wife she was they'd be chasing her. I got Abbey out on the bunny trails yesterday but no bunnies were found. It sure was a nice day for a walk and Abbey had to be dried off before the Queen would let her into the house. I wonder why a wet dog smells so bad. BTW the radio just told me that today is day 1 on the garbage cycle. No trash on the curb today. It's in the shop waiting for repairs She was lost on her geneaolgy reasearch. Those thing are just about a throw away item now. Repairs in a shop cost almost as much as a new machine. I bought her a new one. Luckily i had did a complete backup of the laptop befroe taking it into the shop. luckily the thing ran long enough to do a complete backup. This morning I restored the project she was working on from and external hard drive. If the cost to repair the laptop is under $100 I'll have a laptop to add to the hoard. It will come in handy if the Queen and I venture back to her birthplace at Gand manan or visit the daughter in Newfoundland. It's funny while hooking up the new computer I found an external drive I had bought her under her desk. The thing still had backups up to Jan 1 of this year. The Queen hadn't told me the thing was missing. lol I'll have to schedule the EaseUS free backuo app I use to back the new comp on a regular basis. At one time I would have backed up the laptop and reinstalled the OS. The confusion caused by damage to the cocentration area of the brain sure makes things harder. Tonight Clear. I'll have to bring a video cam and catch her running in the snow with her nose to the ground still not aware that the gophers are sleeping. They sure are missing some great weather. I took Alley's advice yesterday and laid low on the tiny rifle project. All I did was to sand off the old finish on the piece of mahogany I had shaved off the day before. Today I'll give it another try and with the nice weather take my tiny explosives box outdoors and use some red spray paint on it and have it ready for the next time I foul up. :) If I do get the stock made to my satisfaction I'm sure the settlers could use a box of dyamite to break down the boulders found in some parts of the prairie. We used to use dynamite while building bridges in the winter to loosen the frozen ground so that a timber pile could be driven into the ground. We had one blaster who said he could uproot a tree with a 1/4 stick of dynamite prperly placed. It wold sure beat cutting the tree down then trying to pull the stump out. An experienced blaster can do amazing things with the tool of their trade. Off on another topic. Afffordable housing sure is hard to come by in Portage. The granddaughter still has her bed in our living room. The Queen checked witha local landlord and he said he has nothing and even he has a neice bunking in his home. With high water levels persisting on Lake Manitoba many residents along the shoreline are still evacuated and rental homes are really hard to come by. Some landlords are taking advantage of the situation with some charging as much as $400 for a single room. The overnight low will be -9C(15F). ------------------------------------------------- --- I blew the rifle stock project again yesterday. After staining the stock and hollowing out a small grove for the barrel then gluing the barrel in place I realized that I had the barrel on the wrong side. I guess I'm into plan c today and carve out another one. This time I;ll slice a piece of mahogany moulding left over from the bathroom project. It should come out a nice color for the stock. I think I;ll make a small box, label it explosives, and blow the whole thing up. :) But as the Queen says" It fills your day". I checked the Link Alley left me yesterday, that guy sure makes realistic looking cabins. I wonder if he uses mud and grass clippings tp chink the spaces between logs. I could start building log cabins and add them to my growing list of enterprises of a bakery, screech coffee shop and roofing business. :) On that note it's time for me to create some more goodies as all the treats have dissappeared. I got Abbey out on the gopher trails yesterday and I'm going to have to change the name of our route. Yesterday she flushed out a bunny and when she finally gave up the chase she came back to me oanting. That walk sure is good exercise for her. The low tonight will be -3C(26F). ------------------------------------------------ After a trek along the gopher trails with Abbey and the visit to the MD's I made my first attempt at a tiny riffle stock. While at the doctor's I scrounged a couple of tongue depressor hopeing to use them as raw material for the stock. Bad idea, I glued 2 together to get the thickness I needed and started carving with the dremel. My first problem was that I wasn't satisfied with the shape and later found that that the wood was too hard to take a stain properly. The stain also dissolved the carpenter's glue I had used. I guess the glue isn't made for such tiny projects. Last night I shaved a couple of thin pieces from a 2X4 and will try to match a picture I found on the web of the Winchester lever action rifle that won the west. I'll never say " I can't do it". Just too stubborn I guess. I think my mother passed on some good things like my determination and never give up attitude as well as as the bad things like my susceptibilities to blood clotting and strokes. The visit to the doctor's was a so-so thing. The MRI showed no new damage and the echo-gram didn't find the clot in the heart. The doctor said to stay on the rat poison anyway. He did say that the pumper is only pumping 50-60% of what it should and the probable cause of that is the dead meat the heart surgeon removed while doing the by-pass. I guess I'll always be a walking pile of human junk parts. There's not much to give if I decided to be an organ donor. lol So far only the kidneys seem to be functioning well. I see my daughter's visits to my blog are showing up on my new visitor map. I'm back online today.
I was awake yesterday at 1am and couldn't get back to sleep. I feel sorry for roofers who always work with shingles, it must be a tough life. I got Abbey out for a downtown walk yesterday. I made a thin board from a 2x4 to place the the trunk on the covered wagon.yesterday. The Queen says I'm faking my vision problems when I slice an 1/8th inch thick piece from a 2x4 by hand. What a silly time to get into miniaturization. I'll have to have a closer look at the rifle my uncle carved and see if I can replicate it. I can't leave those settlers with out a means to get fresh meat. I guess the next item will be a small 1 furrow plow to break the prairie grass and make a garden. :) I'll have to find another horse though. With the high abbove freezing today I'll get Abbey out sfter my visit with the doctor. By now he should have the results from the echo cardiogram and the MRI. View (4) Comments For This Post
