Finally, some monsoonal moisture for Colorado. Moisture that actually reached the ground!
When I went to sleep around 1:30 pm, bright cumulus were building to the west towards the Continental Divide. The humidity was 45%, higher than it has been for days. I slept until 8:30 pm. I awoke to occasional lightning flashes and thunder. The rain gauge said the 0.07 inches had fallen. I drove to work in rain, heavy at times, and it stopped right before I got to Pena Blvd. The southern edge of this storm had passed over. When I turned to the north via Pena, I went right back into it, then back out of it as it had passed over.
On my shift, which began at 10:30 pm, no more rain, but distant lightning to the west and northwest. Thunderstorm cells stayed over the foothills until about 3 am – it was like they couldn’t get over the mountains. One strike hit the ground within 10 miles and I had to report a 15-minute (the shortest possible) thunderstorm. I enjoyed watching the show. After that, showers remained planted over the foothills, but no more lightning. But I could feel the humidity increasing to the mid-80 percent range.
Today is forecast to be much the same as today. Welcome to the rainy season!
