In my Clinton backyard, December 2011 had some wide swings in temperature that ended up averaging 1.8 degrees above normal. From 75 on Sunday the 4th, it plunged to 24 the morning of Thursday the 8th. Seven days in a row were below normal after that cold front. There were a couple of other smaller cold spells but all those were offset by extreme warmness. Eighteen days were above normal with the peak reaching 22 degrees above normal at midmonth. Rainfall was a little over six inches, about an inch above normal. Twelve days had at least a little rain. That was nice since we had been so dry earlier in the year. No snow on the ground but we had a few ice pellets on Wednesday the 7th. Thunder was heard on the 22nd and 26th. Strangely, bits of fog happened on 27 days. None lowered the visibility to a quarter mile. Winds were not strong and shifted from SE to NW before the cold spells. Fourteen days had clear skies or were less than a third covered by clouds. The barometer fell five times as pressure systems passed through. There were not as many birds this month, either due to migration or hawks that hovered above. As the month closed, swarms of blackbirds were seen flying from the northwest.

Dec 21 & 22nd have the shortest daylight and are called the beginning of winter. But in my Clinton backyard autumn ended at 1:15 PM Dec 5. A sharp cold front shifted the South wind to NNW and dropped the temperature 18 degrees in one hour. Rain started. By 7 PM it had gone from 70 down to 44 Degrees. It stayed below normal for eight days. When the month closes, I'll summarize not only December, but give the highlights of 2011.

November in Clinton and central Mississippi was both “ordinary” and different. The temperature averaged about a degree above the 30-year normal. In my Clinton backyard and the metro area, there were a few days below normal then a few days above for four cycles in the month. The highest temperature was 82; the lowest, 29. Only nine days had rain for a total of about 3 ½ inches which is an inch below normal. The heaviest showers fell in the 3-day 26-28 period...
