Scipio Center in Cayuga County New York date... 05/21/2013 estimated time... 630 PM to 645 PM EDT estimated maximum wind speed... 60 to 70 mph maximum path width... path length... 5 miles beginning lat/Lon... 42.7933 N / -76.5294 W ending lat/Lon... 42.7886 N / -76.4362 W * fatalities... 0 * injuries... 0 * the information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event(s) and publication in NWS storm data. ... Summary... the National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY has confirmed a microburst /straight line wind damage/ near Scipio Center in Cayuga County New York on 05/21/2013. Severe winds caused a discontinuous path of sporadic damage to trees, crossed Owasco Lake and completely destroyed one old barn. This information can also be found on our website at weather.Gov/bgm. For reference... a microburst is a convective downdraft with an affected outflow area of less than 2 1/2 miles wide and peak winds lasting less than 5 minutes. Microbursts may induce dangerous horizontal/vertical wind shears... which can adversely affect aircraft performance and cause property damage. Straight-line winds are generally any wind that is not associated with rotation... used mainly to differentiate them from tornadic winds. |
