... Freezing rain possible this afternoon and tonight...
A cold front will bring some light precipitation to the area this afternoon through tonight. With cold air trapped in some valleys, there is a slight risk for freezing rain.
The freezing rain threat will begin this afternoon in the Umpqua basin and then progress south through the rogue and Illinois valleys late this afternoon and evening... then to the Shasta Valley and the Klamath basin this evening and overnight. Rain may freeze on contact because the ground is already cold due to the recent spell of sub freezing temperatures.
Overall, confidence in freezing rain occuring is low. This is due to some expected surface warming today, some mixing of the surface air as the front moves through, and the overall rarity of freezing rain in this region.
If freezing rain does occur, ice accumulations are expected to be minimal. However, it only takes a small amount of icing to cause a significant driving hazard.
On Friday we should have enough warming for any icing to melt by the afternoon. Check the latest Oregon and northern California Road conditions and, as always, be sure to check the Medford National Weather Service web site for updates!
