I read that the speed of the storms can reach a quite high velocity; does the dust storm act as a sandblast machine and strip paint from everything that stands it is way?
No the Haboob or dust storm does not act as a sandblaster. It just spreads a lot of dust around and the worst thing that happens is being a vehicle and driving through it. It is very, very scary because you cannot see anything on either side past the hood of the vehicle. You cannot pull off the side of the road because you cannot see the side of the road. I believe the best thing to do is keep on driving straight ahead and pray no one has slowed down or stopped in front of you. Probably some good advice would be to turn on your headlights in hope people would be able to see your taillights and not hit you.
